Post Jeep announces Trailhawk . . . again

Jeep is rolling out the Trailhawk concept again this year. It was intro'd at the Detroit show a couple of years ago, and is now getting a second chance on the show circuit. With a few test mules in steel, the concept seems to be an attempt to shrug off the "cheap" image of the Compass and the Patriot as it makes this year's rounds of the auto shows.

The previewed Trailhawk is still to be built on the 4-door Wrangler frame, giving it sufficient rigidity to adopt '70's issue T-top for your outdoor pleasure. Riding on exceptionally wide 22" rims with 305-series tires, it adopts some of the look of a luxury rock crawler, but whether function follows form is doubtful. It will still boast a 3.0L common-rail diesel V6 that cranks out 215 horsepower and a stump-pulling 376 ft-lbs of grunt out of the MB-derived smoker motor that pairs up with the same auto transmission in the Grand Cherokee.

Will they build it? As a marketing move it makes sense because it would have little competition in the segment that also includes the FJ at the lower end. If you have need of a pretty sophisticated-looking little mountain cabin for four, complete with an oil stove, your ride may be coming to your Jeep dealer soon.

It's interesting, but Jeep would have to stick around for this to ever even be possible to be seen on the road ... so right now the best it can get from me is: well that's nice.
