Default Pirelli and Brembo reinvent the wheel and tire

pirelli working with Brembo and Magneti Marelli on Cyber Tire
by Jonathon Ramsey Feb 1st, 2009 at 4:29PM

Pirelli's Cyber Tire will provide real-time tire performance information via a chip/transponder setup in the tire tread. Operating temperature and pressures, typology of the road's surface, and vertical load exerted on the tire will be among the data collected and monitored. The system will work in conjunction with another Pirelli invention, the Cyber Wheel, which will convey wheel information such as hub loads in the same way.

Now that the tire company has partnered with Brembo and Magnetti Marelli on the Cyber Tire, the tie-up could mean a system that quickly transfers information from the tire to the driver, car, and brakes, allowing for more informed and instantaneous performance changes based on driving conditions.

As automotive technology comes increasingly dependent on advanced computers, it seems that firms like Lucas and Magneti Marelli are creeping out of the dark corners of our experience to get involved in the coming evolution of the automobile as a cyber-vehicle. To my belabored mind it also conjures up new meanings for "crash" and "BSOD".

Why do you need the tire to tell you what surface you're on? can't you see if you ar on the road or you're off the road and crashing into a tree?

I wonder if it may over comlicate things, but probably not considering the level of technology and the rate of its progression

One more bauble to help distract us from the road.

90% of the time this device will be completely useless.

The other 10% will be determined be the drivers ability to decide what to do with the current info before it the road conditions change, and he has to start thinking about why he's constantly thinking about road conditions and not the cars break lights in front of him.
