Default Castrol EDGE 8X better protection than Mobil 1???

thoughts??

I'm not a big Castrol fan because of the SYNTEC issue, but I'll probably switch to Pennzoil Platinum synthetic....been reading bad things about M1 recently.

Mobil 1 with the now added Supersyn is pretty good oil. Mobil 1 is factory fill & recommended for Corvette, Porshe, Caddy V series and many other high performance vehicles.. The same can be said for Castrol Synthetic oils.. Change your oil at recommended intervals and you should not have any problems..

I've been using Castrol Syntec 0W30 for some time (goes back to even when I was in Mexico) and it's by far my favorite oil. Mobil 1 gave me consumptions issues (in Mexico) that I had to remedy with additives to avoid going up in weight, but that was a whole different environment for my vehicle, too. Amsoil and Pennzoil Platinum would also be on my list of oils if the German Castrol, as we call that 0W30, was not available.

I've looked at GC vs. this Edge, but as far as I read on tech specs, the GC seems to still be what I'd go for, barring some miracle of oil analysis that I would read otherwise over on www.bobistheoilguy.com in their forums, http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php

this isn't saying much, since the Mobil 1 reformulation back in 2000 it hasn't been anything special. It's no longer a PAG derived oil. May as well run Penzoil syntetic or whatever is on sale. If you want the good stuff you have to go AMSOIL or Royal Purple now, or the German Castrol which is impossible to find.

Pennzoil! That's what I use in my engine. I've known guys 1980s toyota corollas who dont change their oil for god knows when and they've elapsed the 250k mile barrier without a problem. Our engines are damn good (in fact most newer engines). As long as its getting its healthy dose of oil change at the right interval, it's good enough.

That little * at the end of their claim worries me but I do hope that statement is true. That means M1 will need to step it up and improve their oil which benefits us all.

interesting note about castrol.

they got the name from castor oil which is what their products were based off of.

I never knew that lol

also the guy who started Castrol, ironically, left Vacuum Oil over a disagreement with the management regarding Vacuum Oil's foray into the railroad lubricants sector.

The irony you ask?

Vacuum oil went on to become Mobil Oil.

I've always had a high opinion of Castrol oils.......used them myself for many years.

For daily driving, unless you live in a climate with brutal winters like the upper Midwest, interior Canada/Alaska, or the scorching hot Southwestern desert summers, or have a turbo/supercharged engine that creates a lot of heat, I'm not sold on paying extra for full-synthetics. They work best, and give the most benefits, at extreme temperatures. But, of course, if the manufacturer requires synthetic for warranty coverage, then use it.
