Thumbs up Mazda confirms RX-7 and RX-9 sports cars are on the way

Those of you that are still depressed over the cancellation of the Honda S2000 and the Acura/Honda NSX, there is some good new coming out of Japan today. Mazda sources have told Inside Line that a new Mazda RX-7 is in the works along with a new Mazda RX-8 which is expected to be rebadged as the Mazda RX-9.

Rotary engines will continue being used in Mazda vehicles. Insiders say that the RX-7 will feature a front midship-mounted 16x rotary engine producing in the excess of 270-hp. Featuring a 800cc x 2 configuration, fuel-economy will be improved by 20 percent. The new engine will be mated to a twin-clutch 6-speed transmission.

Mazda engineers are working hard to reduce weight of the RX-7 to a curb-weight in the 2,640-pound range.
It has been previously reported that the next-generation Mazda RX-7 will take inspiration from the Taiki concept seen at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

My take: Mazda realizes men still have ***** (look at Nissan) and don't all want to drive ugly sedans and SUVs from Toyota and Honda. Thus Mazda already has the most interesting Japanese lineup which will get more interesting.

I can't believe *****=Mazda, Nissan, Hyundai and depression= Toyota, Honda.

I love what Mazda is doing and where they continue to go.

Mazda is a little better than Honda/Toyota as far as fit and finish. I hope they can make these good cars but look at the new Mazda 3 :/

Interesting. Mazda makes some alright cars. Nothing that I would consider purchasing....ever.

They make some sporty cars and some really good all around vehicles as well, but nothing that ever gets my attention.

A 2,600lb RX-7 with maybe 300hp may change that.

An RX-8 with some TORQUE would be nice.... 159 Lbs. in my 07... kicking a soccer ball develops more torque...

Yea, RX-8 drink gas like an SUV & lack power. But still dig the engine.

You're kidding me right?

My fully loaded CX-7 looks worn and dated in one year, more than any Toyco/Honda vehicle i have owned before (and that's quite a few). The leather isn't very sturdy, the plastics (which are abundant) scratches quite easily, and there are creaks and rattles everywhere now. I won't even touch on the quality issues with the engine....

I have a woody.

Wish they would turbo charge the RX7 though...

....I would buy one if its reasonably priced like the 370Z and looks better than the ugly RX8.

...how long will these rotories last though...
