Unhappy Porsche Test Driver Dies on Autobahn Testing Pre-Production 911

STUTTGART, Germany: Porsche says one of its drivers was killed in a round-the-clock endurance test of a 911 Cabriolet on the autobahn.

Police say the 51-year-old crashed into the center guard rail of the A5 autobahn between Frankfurt and Heidelberg at 2:40 a.m. Friday. The driver, who had 25 years' experience, died at the scene.

Spokesman Dirk Erat says the road-endurance exercise was not a high-speed test, which are not done on open roads and the cause of the crash is unclear. He says the 911 was part of a test in which three drivers drove the car nonstop in shifts around-the-clock.

Agreed, but probably will have minimal PR impact. But the tragic loss cannot be minimized.

Damn, i doubt he fell asleep since there were 3 drivers taking turns. Maybe mechanical problems since its a pre-production vehicle?

Autobahn, so he probably drove close to 80-100mph on that thing. Still sad news.

**** mechanical problems look at how half of the car is under the guard rail. The guard rail has a 3 foot gap in between ground and the rail.

My question is why would they have a guard rail that would allow a car to get into that postion? Surely they must know that there are a lot o low profile cars using the autobahn? If the guard rail was right down to the ground he may have just bounced off the rail and maybe survived.

Anyway, anyone losing a life is tragic.

I agree. Until there's a better explanation, didn't those civil engineers put some thought into it???

RIP to the driver.

From the pics, the rail looks virtually useless. A taller vehicle would go right over top into oncoming traffic and we can see what happens with lower cars. And this on the fastest highway in Europe? I thought German engineers were tier one?
