At least Mercedes has gotten the idea. Though I imagine it will be awhile before we see most manufactureres new efforts to reduce weight. ...smaller wheels is a start. Nothing wrong with 17s IMO.

unless they start doing so, i won't count on it yet. if we go talk about weight hike, mb is probably in worse shape than bmw imho

wheels, i don't know. after all, styling is a big aspect in auto industries.

The use of the more expensive aluminum instead of steel cuts down on weight.. Many auto makers still utilize all steel chassis and suspension components which are rust prone & heavy..

The weight of cars has increased insanely over the past 15 years. americans and their cars need to go on a diet. LOL The strict safety regulations isnt helping either, but it saves lives. The future is in carbon fiber. Lighter and stronger is better. If they can only work on reducing the price.

There's another down side though (aside from cost)... aluminum chassis components damage more easily in wrecks and are far far more complicated and expensive to fix.

Wow, if that simple, whole lot of options open up on all-wheel performance machines....

sorry, what award? I know it has won a few but I couldn't find any for 09.

anyway...like I said, IMO (which doesn't mean much) if it was pumping out 300hp without the 2 turbos I would agree....so geez, if its so great, Lexus should just bi-turbo the their 3.5 liter motor

Acura NSX, Lotus, BMW and a few others use all aluminum chassis. It is strong yet light weight.

Well, I guess Wards has started early

Wards Crowns BMW N54 3.0L I6 1 of 10 Best Engines For 2009
Posted in BMW, Cadillac, Diesel, Dodge, Ford, auto industry · Published on January 7, 2009

Wards Automotive Group recently announced their esteemed picks for the 10 Best Engines of 2009, BMW AG managed to take home not one, but two coveted spots on the list. A three-year veteran of Ward’s list, BMW AG’s twin-turbo, direct-inject standard petrol I6 (135i coupe) was joined this year by its FOB cousin, BMW’s 3.0L I6 turbodiesel (335d sedan). Enjoying its inaugural year on U.S. soil, BMW’s turbodiesel offering amazed Wards judges with its impressive combination of both fuel-efficiency and performance output. Utilizing a sequential twin-turbocharger system, the 3.0L I6 turbodiesel manages to average 22 mpg city/ 33 mpg highway while still managing to produce a whopping 286-horsepower and 425 lb-ft (576 Nm) of torque.

Although BMW certainly deserves a hearty tip of the hat (as does RideLust reader Rock517 for the tip) for earning double honors, it wasn’t just the usual track-day suspects who managed to snag Wards’ attention this year.

Although we’d expect nothing less from the Ultimate Driving Machine, we’re downright impressed by the heavy Detroit representation on this year’s list, but we’re slightly disappointed the Dodge Charger’s 425-hp 6.1L SRT HEMI V8 didn’t make the cut.

Wards Automotive Group 2009 10 Best Engines

Audi AG: 2.0L TFSI turbocharged DOHC I-4 (A4 Avant)
BMW AG: 3.0L turbocharged DOHC I-6 (135i Coupe)
BMW AG: 3.0L DOHC I-6 Turbodiesel (335d)
Chrysler LLC: 5.7L Hemi OHV V-8 (Dodge Ram/Challenger R/T)
Ford Motor Co.: 2.5L DOHC I-4 HEV (Escape Hybrid)
General Motors Corp.: 3.6L DOHC V-6 (Cadillac CTS)
Honda Motor Co. Ltd.: 3.5L SOHC V-6 (Accord Coupe)
Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd.: 4.6L DOHC V-8 (Genesis)
Toyota Motor Corp.: 3.5L DOHC V-6 (Lexus IS 350)
Volkswagen AG: 2.0L SOHC I-4 Turbodiesel (Jetta TDI)
