Default REPORT : Toyota reviving Celica name for joint Subaru RWD car

Over the past few months, rumors have circulated that the joint venture between Toyota and Subaru to develop an affordable, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe has been delayed. ToMoCo president, Akio Toyoda, sought to address those concerns at last month's Tokyo Auto Salon, and according to Toyota's new overlord, development is still underway.

Toyoda told the assembled masses that the new FR sports car is an essential part of the automaker's "rejuvenation" efforts to bring younger people into the fold, and a large part of that is price. The coupe is still expected to cost around 2,000,000 yen (a little over $21,000 US) and is set to go on sale in 2012. According to Toyoda, the production postponement has nothing to do with the delay in construction of the Toyota/Subaru factory, where the two-door was due to be built next year. Instead, Toyoda claims that the hold up is due to the adaption of Toyota's new D-4S direct injection system for the flat-four engine. Currently, the FR sports car is codenamed "086A," and for those of you schooled in the world of Hachirokus, that spells good things to come.

Price keeps going up. Original rumors were around $15,000, then went up to $16,000, so I guess $21,000 is the new number.

Not sure how I feel about a 4 cylinder for $21K.

$21k for a RWD 4-banger (which will be about 190hp) by 2012 is expectable.

$19k is what we would expect in today's market.

Hell, a FWD 160hp Scion tC is $17k.

Preludes cost around $25k back in 2001. Whats wrong with $21 for a DI Subaru? Nothing.

Shouldn't this thing have 200+ hp? The RSX-S has 200hp.

I have a hard time believe it would be only 190hp.

For 2012 this thing should have at least 240hp for anyone to buy it. A RWD 240+ HP compact car should be fun to drive.

No. One it's light, like the RSX. Two, I have a feeling we will see a turbocharged model in the future.

i was thinking that too.. this is going to have some very tough competition with the genesis coupe.. esp with 2 engine configurations to choose from.. im liking the styling on the rear of the genesis but the front, not so much.. im digging the front from this car though..

i wonder what they'll call it..

Wow, I don't consider Subaru as the benchmark for steering and suspension systems. I am aware of their leadership with proven AWD systems.
