The problem with some of the cars mentioned is that their production numbers are too high for the car to be collectible, at least within the foreseeable future. That's the problem with M and AMG cars (since there's a ton of them), unless it's a rare car like the CLK Black, SLR, or Z8. I think you can look at the current rate of depreciation of these cars as an indication of future collectability.

I believe Sick is on the right track with the CTS-V and ZR-1. NSXs and Supras are already rare and are obvious choices. I think it'll be a long time before S2000s start increasing in value.
Good post. I wonder too and will have to say the buyers at future auctions will be different. They will be us. Which means we will value imports and see their value whereas in most auctions today as Dashocker stated, its mostly all American cars or Euro cars.

Outside the Toyota 2000GT and maybe the Datsun 240Z, is any older Japanese car sold in America desirable in the auction circuit?

Agreed, limited production run of desirable cars helps insure a path to becoming a classic. Of course cars like the 65/66 Mustang which sold in huge numbers are one of the obvious rare exceptions, but today the truly nice ones have dwindled in number.

limited numbers will help the price and desirabilty, but they sell classic mustangs and camaros all of the time and they sold literally millions of them.
