February 2009 Auto Sales

and the suspension is tuned to be "sporty"/~~only.
both of which lead to a big chunk loss of customer base..
and they tend to advertise it as a niche "sporty" mid-size car.

I don't think Acura is all that happy with their bread and butter TL selling less than the TSX. 6th on this list is disappointing. TL's 37.2% year-to-year drop looks to be on par with industry. The other Japanese entry lux sedans/coupes did take a bigger beating. The European sedans gained significant market share.
I don't find anything impressive about TL sales.

3 Series - 11,427
C-Class - 7,022
CTS - 6,677
ES - 5,546
TL- 4,807
G Sedan - 4,754
IS - 4,547
A4 - 4,260
MKZ - 2,706
And the Feb. monthly sales:
3 Series - 6,414
C Class - 3,990
CTS - 3,259
ES - 2,575
TL - 2,490
A4 - 2,202
IS - 2,147
G Sedan - 2,145
MKZ - 1,145
My point is that the TL isn't selling as low as some had predicted due to it's looks and I'm not sure what you mean by the TL selling less than TSX because the TL sold 2,490 compared to the TSX 2,293 with the YTD TL: 4,807 to TSX: 4,699

The TL is actually 5th on the list and outsold the TSX in Feb. All things being considered the TL is doing okay.

The new TL was released around the same time as the new A4 so let's compare the two:
A4 down 20%
TL down 37%
TL is doing okay? I don't think so.
Let's not forget, the number alone doesn't tell the whole story.

the anti-acura sentiment has only been among the few people of this forum.
forums are always skewed one way.
it hardly represents the true consumer market.

I separate the two because Infiniti reports sells of their G37 sedan and coupe separately. If BMW reported coupe and sedan sales of the 3 separately I would do the same.

Spin it how you want but the all new “ugly” TL is outselling the all new A4. The A4, as well as Audi as a whole, was already down in the dumps here in the US, so it had no place to go but up in sells. VW/Audi should pack up and go back to Euroland where people seem to like unreliable cars.

TL down 37%
A4 down 20%
Both were released around the same time.
Also, let's not trying to pretend that we didn't know when the last generation TL was first released, it was the SALES LEADER IN THE ENTRY LUX SEGMENT. Yes, as in it outsold the 3-series sedans for about a year. Just on that alone, the new TL is not doing well, at least not as well as its predecessor.
I don't spin, but I also don't just look at the numbers alone, instead I take the sales numbers and analyze them.

looks like hyundai/kia will have a historic year for them. Kia Soul will be a huge hit and hyundai just started to sell gen coupes.
it would be interesting to see how many gen coupes will be sold every months. my guess is at least 2500-3000 a month.

Considering the dramatic difference between the economic situation in February 2008 and February 2009, it seems kind of useless to compare previous year sales decreases by percentage or units. In this market, I would form my opinions based on previous months sales and compare it to that.
If a car sold more in February than it did in January, then I take that as a positive considering the environment and the lower number of selling days.

Ahh OK
As for the 2009 TL, I agree that it is selling OK ... not great or even good but it is doing OK when compared to its competitors.
Hyundai/Kia is doing well altho I am still amazed that how low the Sonata is selling compared to the Accord/Altima/Camry ... more surprised @ how low the Mazda 6 sells next to the 3.

The probability of you losing your job is much like the political tracking poll - it could be very high one day and it can fall the next (okay we’re just kidding President Obama, sorry). American citizens are in fear and have been cutting back on spending their hard earned cash on costly items. Those looking for a new car are avoiding driving up to a car dealership and February auto sales, which were down to their lowest level in 40 years, are a perfect example.
In Detroit, GM reported the largest drop at 52.9 percent followed by FoMoCo at 48.4 percent. Chrysler was the better part of its to Detroit rivals with a drop of 44 percent.
Japanese automakers also reported a significant drop in February 2009 sales with Toyota reporting the largest drop at 39.8 percent followed by Honda at 38 percent. Nissan reported a decrease of 37 percent.
Subaru and Kia reported a gain of 1.4 percent and 0.4 percent respectively. Hyundai reported a drop of 1.5 percent.
