Default Infiniti Essence joins luxury coupe scene at Geneva motor show

Infiniti looks to make a splash in the European luxury coupe market with the Essense concept, a curvaceous rear-drive, two-seat, hybrid-powered car.

Infiniti isn't saying it will build the Essence. But styling cues on the car will show up on future Infiniti models.

But the Japanese luxury brand sets its stake at a time when several other luxury automakers--including Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls-Royce--are rolling out new models. Pay no attention to that crashing sound coming from world economies.

The heart of the Essence is Nissan's venerable 3.7-liter V6 engine, fitted with twin turbochargers for the concept. The engine is rated at 434 hp.

Adding to that output is an integrated starter-generator, sandwiched between the engine and transmission, that adds 158 hp. The starter-generator propels the Essence on electric power at low speeds, drawing on a lithium-ion battery pack stored in the trunk.

The sleek styling of the Essence leads to a small trunk opening. So Infiniti worked with Louis Vuitton to create a three-piece luggage set that fits the trunk space. When the trunk lid is opened, the trunk floor slides out for easy access to the luggage.

The passenger compartment in the Essence is divided in half by a center console that sweeps out from the instrument panel. The driver's area, which a black color scheme, exudes a sports car feel with a gauge cluster that mimics high-end watches. The passenger's area, with a red color scheme, is swathed in luxury appointments.

New technologies include crash prevention for the side and rear. The system will sound a warning and automatically apply the brakes if sensors detect an object nearby when the driver attempts a lane change or when backing up.

looks like Infinit stole Aston's thunder. the infiniti looks years more modern than the Aston.

comparison of sports coupes at Geneva: (WTF is that Zagato??! Looks like something out of Super Mario 2)

That looks pretty good. (dont like the grill though). The LF-A doesn't even look exotic, at least compared to this.

We'll see if Infiniti pulls through.

This thing looks crazy awesome. Cool lighted badge in the front. I had a feeling they were going to go with twin-turbo's and direct injection. Everybody seems to be doing it. BMW, Ford, etc...

434HP VQ G37TT = 335i what?

Even in a very mild tune, this engine should be making ridiculous power.

I dont find this to be beautiful, but it is very nice. Infiniti did a good job here.

Rear end reminded me of the TVR a little, but its obviously more like the FX truck. Weird they would take styling cues from the truck and apply it to a sports car, but they made it work.

Would be nice to see them produce this, but I have a feeling we wont exactly see this. Styling cues will probably be carried over onto other vehicles.

LoL. Even with all these recent rumors about the LFA being "too far along in the production process to stop" I really won't believe it until I see it.

Let's see which one makes to production first, LF-A or this.

My money's on LF-A.

"Infiniti isn't saying it will build the Essence. But styling cues on the car will show up on future Infiniti models."

Uh huh.

Infiniti says that this is a showcase of design cues which will be incorporated into future models, to which I say wonderful. But I can't help but believe that it's also here to test public reaction to just such a car. If there's enough interest or outcry to produce it I'm sure Infiniti could. No doubt this shares a great deal of the GT-R's mechanicals so they have a proven and fully developed platform to build it on.
