if Mercedes officially approves Techron as fuel additive, why doesn't Lexus?

They all have some. I believe there is a federal standards that fuel companies to go by.

Not all detergents are the same..Think of it as soap I guess. Some are better than others.

Arco and all the cheapie stations - Costco included use a generic add pack. Not to mention Arco cuts their gas down with more ethanol than is used as an oxygenate - Cali calls for 10-15% ethanol to be added to their fuels.

My car runs great on straight Chevron Supreme or Costco gas after I add in 2-3 ounces of Red Line SI-1. I've been noticing lately I've been guzzling Shell's new "nitrogen enriched" gas - or maybe because I've been using the AC compressor in tandem with the heater to keep the condensation down.

Both Techron and SI-1 use PEA - polyethylamine based chemistry to keep the injectors and intake path clean. SI-1 is 50% PEA by volume along with stoddard solvent and polyol ester oil as a upper cylinder lubricant. Techron is about 20% or so of PEA with stoddard solvent and xylene as its carrier solvent.

will that get me more mileage?

Arco claims their gas is as clean as the next for fuel injectors.

and since all the local brands get their gas from the same pipe, the ethanol content should be the same.

Marketing, pure and simple.

From a Beneto driver I talked to, he told me all gas in Cali come from the same refineries - but when the tanker pulls up to the filling rack and punches in the code that is provided by the customer, it will inject any specific additives into that load.

My 1991 LS400 has a relatively clean intake tract/injectors. Our beater 1996 Nissan Quest however, since it sees only whatever's cheapest needed a few decarbonizings to be done. Besides, use Arco and you'll keep your dealership/mechanic/quick lube and the BG/MOC man rich.

I guess this is a good alternative for those who can't get to stations that have good detergents?

Why do you want to boost octane...?

I feel for you. I have to drive a "long" 10 miles to get to the nearest Shell, but at least there's one I can reasonably get to.

I thought BP/Amoco were on that list of top tier gasses, but evidently not. What happened?

Since I only use top tier gasoline (Chevron exclusively in my case), I add no additional additives.

Bingo! The same way Mobil 1 is recommended oil for Porshe, Caddy, Acura etc. & Castrol for BMW.

To get on the "Top Tier" gas list, the oil company must guarantee that
95% of the gas stations carrying its brand meet the Top Tier standards.

Just because BP/Amoco isn't on the list doesn't mean that BP/Amoco gas
is no good. It just means at leats 5%(or more) of the BP/Amoco gas
stations are not actually selling BP/Amoco gas.

For example, there are two gas station near my office, Exxon and Costco.
I recently found out that both stations get gas delivered by the same
gasline truck.

but thats how it is everywhere.

so what do you guys recommend-- how often should i buy an additive to keep my injectors clean?

i have another 7 year old car, and it's eaten only the cheapest 'crappiest' gas, and never had any injector problems.

BP, IMO, is a ripoff. In my area, what few BP stations there are charge about 30-40 cents a gallon more than even other top-tier brands like Chevron and Shell. Sure, BP is good stuff, but I don't see where it is any better than Chevron's Techron or Shell's V-power, both of which are exellent (I use chiefly Shell, and sometimes Chevron).

Its probably Benz and Chevron in Bed. Sounds like BS. If you have been putting in your cars for years with no issues I don't think I would be to concerned
