A huge part of the strangulation of GM is due to what's commonly called "legacy costs" resulting from numerous poor management decisions made over the years. Contractual relationships with UAW are only some of the many significant problems that GM has. Only some of these costs and burdens have been identified above.
GM entered into contracts with the UAW without any duress or force. Back then GM thought they were always going to be big and powerful. Now they are powerless and shrinking at an exponential rate...so GM is and always was on the same playing field as all the other auto manufacturers in the whole entire world...

GM is a dead corp. walking...R.I.P.

As I said "poor management decisions".............

And the list is a lot longer than just the contracts with UAW............

But of course...

Too many divisions...
Poor reliability in their products...
Too much focus on big SUV's and very little focus on small cars and alternative powertrains but as of late GM is working on that but then again a little too late...
Inefficiencies in the manufacturing processes..

And the list can go on and on and on...

I agree, the list is huge. It's probably already a case for a academic business review of just how poorly a business can be run into the ground.
