I thought they are going to do a facelift for ES this year..

A hybrid model seems in order, but I'm sure it's not as easy as dumping the Camry hybrid's system into the ES with a 3.5L engine.

Talked about this before. Evidently an ES hybrid makes too much sense for Lexus to do.

Audi Reports Strong U.S. Import Luxury Market Share Gain in March

- The Audi share of U.S. import luxury sales jumped 1.3 points to 7.77%

- The Audi Q5 debuted with strong sales in March

- Positive demand for the Audi A5 continues through first quarter of 2009.

HERNDON, Va., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Audi today announced sales for the month of March totaling 6,433 units sold. Audi's share of U.S. import luxury vehicle sales increased a strong 1.3 percentage points to 7.77% in March. This increase continues the consistent climb in Audi market share throughout last year and in the first months of 2009.

A bright spot in March was the impressive early demand for the Audi Q5. In its first full month, the Q5 recorded sales of 1,094 units, making the Q5 the highest-selling Audi vehicle in March after the A4.

Sales of the Audi A5 and R8 continued to be strong, with the A5 posting a 41.6% sales increase over 2008 due to 657 units sold in March. The A5 has recorded 1,754 total units sold in 2009, an increase of 47.4% over the same time last year. Sales of the Audi R8 kept pace with their March 2008 sales numbers and are up 18.6% year to date.

"The strong debut of the Q5 shows that consumers are recognizing the distinctive improvements this vehicle brings to the luxury crossover market. With the new success of the Q5 and the continued success of the A5, Audi has maintained its momentum and its share of the luxury car market," said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. "While the economic conditions remain challenging, Audi dealers surpassed our projections for the month."

Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales maintained solid numbers. Audi recorded 2,849 CPO units sold in March.

Hyundai Motor America Reports March 2009 Sales

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 40,721 vehicles in March, a five percent decline versus March 2008 but a 33 percent increase over February volume levels.

"We are satisfied with our overall performance in this difficult business climate," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America vice president of national sales. "The fact that we experienced only a nominal decline from an all-time March sales record in 2008 is acceptable to us. Even with continued economic stress and industry uncertainty, this performance is a clear indication that the Hyundai brand is sustaining its momentum and expanding its relevance."

"As we enter the important spring selling season, we fully expect to build on our one percent year-over-year sales increase for the first-quarter of 2009 with continued consumer interest in our Hyundai Assurance Program, growing recognition and acceptance of Genesis as North American Car of the Year, and terrific new models like the new Elantra Touring and Genesis Coupe which will be entering full launch mode."

All new Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by America's Best Warranty. In addition, the Hyundai Assurance Program is now offered on all new Hyundai's leased or purchased at a participating Hyundai dealership. Hyundai Assurance provides protection from certain income-changing life events, allowing consumers to return their vehicles in the first year of ownership without impacting their credit histories, while covering vehicle depreciation (negative equity) up to $7,500.

For a limited time, Hyundai is also offering Hyundai Assurance Plus, adding 90 days of payment relief to the existing protection plan. Hyundai Assurance Plus is part of Hyundai's Spring Sales Event, which runs until April 30, 2009. Hyundai Assurance and Hyundai Assurance Plus are complimentary for the first 12 months of ownership. The programs supplement all existing consumer incentives, and are available to any consumer, regardless of age, health, employment history or financed amount of the vehicle.

Default Kia Motors America Announces March Sales

Company Up 12 percent from February Sales and 1 Percent Year to Date

IRVINE, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced March sales of 24,724 units, an increase of 12 percent from the previous month, and year-to-date sales of 68,893 total units, up 1 percent over the same period last year. March sales were led by Sorento and Sedona, posting 57.8-percent and 61.7-percent increases respectively. The Soul, Kia's all-new and uniquely styled compact with myriad personalization options that began arriving in dealerships in February, also recorded strong sales of 1,246 units.

KMA also posted a 1-percent increase overall in first quarter sales, and continues to expand its value-oriented product line. In addition to overall value, the Kia design evolution is attracting more consumers to the brand with the launch of the all-new Soul and the Forte sedan, which arrives in dealerships this summer.

"Sales of the Kia Sorento and Sedona are strong and we can attribute that to the right marketing strategy and our strong value proposition," said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, KMA. "We also are pleased to have the Soul post impressive results right out of the gate with its recent launch in the U.S market; we feel we have the right vehicles for the times."

So compact SUV segment looks promising.
GLK, Q5, RDX, EX,X3,xc60 are all selling well.

Lexus still decided not go into this segment?

Default Mitsubishi Motors Reports March Sales

CYPRESS, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today announced March 2009 sales of 4,620. This represents an improvement of three percent from February.

March saw another dramatic decline in overall U.S. automotive industry sales. Mitsubishi's sales showed a decrease of 57.0 percent when compared to March 2008 sales of 10,750.

"This challenging economy presents us with opportunities to analyze and reconsider how we address the needs of our unique customer base," said MMNA President & CEO Shin Kurihara. "We expect the exciting future products we reveal next week at the New York Auto Show will be seen as a vital first step toward solidifying a stronger brand direction in this trying market."

I wouldnt be surprised if BMW and MB also have insane lease and finance deals to help out as well.

But I do agree that BMW and MB have more fresh vehicles (and a larger variety of vehicles to chose from) compared to Lexus currently.

Yes it does. Most cars/models sell best when they are new. Also, the sales of most cars taper off near the end of a cycle before a new gen comes out.

I agree that the ES and TL are heavily cross shopped.

Autos: Trading Down in a Recession
Luxury on a Budget

Besieged by layoff fears, falling home values, and shrinking 401(k) accounts, even wealthy U.S. consumers are having to make sacrifices. Many are having to trade down, whether it means buying a new Kenmore instead of a Sub-Zero fridge, or going to J.C. Penney instead of Brooks Brothers. Autos are no exception. In January and February, according to Edmunds.com, Toyota was the top brand traded into by owners of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus vehicles. BusinessWeek Senior Correspondent David Kiley and Detroit Bureau Chief David Welch have 20 suggestions for trade-ins that will help luxury-car owners save money—and face.
