Obama team forces GM and Chrysler out of NASCAR
Good idea, too bad it turned out to be an April fools joke.
I saw the article posted on DRUDGE REPORT, click on it, and its a huge "We're sorry" from Car and Driver Magazine saying they took the joke too far, WOW, they must have got TONS of hate mail to pull it so quickly.
Personally I think its a great idea, those NASCAR teams run in the millions. Let Toyota and Ford duke it out.

I don't see why not. The gov. decided to save them by investing billions in their business. If someone saves you by investing billions they can pretty much tell you how and what to do. Plus I don't see how nascar helps them overcome the crises.

Based on exposure to target audience, the cost of underwriting a NASCAR team or even purchasing a small participation in a particular car has proven to be money well spent. That's the great advertising advantage of NASCAR over F1, Indycar, even the various bull-ring racers, even if under the skin the car is NOTHING like what you can buy in the showroom, the rules require a body that conforms to the general spec of the street-legal car. The car on the track at least resembles the car you can own, making it an outstanding billboard for the marque. With dedicated fans who follow one of the manufacturers, it makes for great fan support . . . and sales.
While the carmakers do help fund the racing effort, sponsors and owners fund the lion's share of the cost. Right now, Chevrolet has been doing quite well on the podium, while Ford, Dodge, and Toyota fight over distant finishes.

Yes, it was a great joke and I am a NASCAR fan, but people take it way to seriously. Yes, the money spent is high, but it brings brand loyalty and dedication to a brand. The vast majorty of Dale Earnhardt JR fans drive chevys and would not be caught dead in a Ford, you just can't buy such crazy dedication.

In a down market you have to be careful with your budget cuts, you can cut a leg off.
I've actually had company officers tell me with a straight face that because of slow sales they are cutting back their marketing budget and laying off salesmen. If your company's in a selling slump, I can't think of a quicker way to put it out of its misery than cut back on your one opportunity to get out of hock by making more sales.

It might be a joke, but its a great idea. Does anyone know how much it cost to run a NASCAR team, tax payer should not have to flip the bill. That money can be much better spend by GM. Honda learn that lesson last year, but GM just keep making one mistakes after another.
