They actually sell more Audi in Europe than BMW and MB. Just because they dont sell well here in the US for whatever reason, it doesnt mean they are junk.

I believe a while back they had a major problem with transmissions or something like that and it really destroyed their image.

I have about 13k miles on my 2009 Audi S5 with no problems to speak of. Sold my Supra shortly afterward because I completely lost interest in the project (those who know me know that it was a VERY clean project). No regrets.

A lot of people go on about how it won't outlast a Lexus. It probably won't, but I'm driving it now, and enjoying everything about it today... things that I did not find in other cars (6MT, good looks, great interior, good engine), and if it becomes unreliable to the point where it's tedious to fix, I'll buy something else. Not every relationship has to end in marriage to be fun.

It was driver error and Audi's mismanagement of the situation that hurt Audi's image. The old 5000 had "unintended acceleration" problems because the pedals were "too close together" i.e. people were too stupid. But then Audi called them (the drivers) on it, they took a huge PR hit. While they're regaining some ground now, that issue really took a toll on them.

Audi had some pretty bad reliability problems in the late 90s to the point where they almost pull out of the US market. Audi have made a come back in a big way as far as reliability is concerned. The lastest JD power 3 year reliability survey show Audi in front of both BMW and MB, they are now above average.
