Buyer for my Integra is asking for a VIN number...
Hi Guys,
I was wondering is it safe to give my VIN number to a potential buy for my integra? He's asking for it. I'm a little scared because I don't want him to know where I live because he can come buy and steal it while I'm sleeping! Anyways, as I refresh his memory about all the aftermarket products I've put into it, he starts typing at the computer for KBB. After me going on and on with the parts, he says, "so you're firm on the price? It says here your vehicle is only worth $1600." I told him I was firm on the price because of all the parts I've added to it. I know I can't consider value for aftermarket products, but this is still my baby. If I sell it, great. If I don't, it's my commuter car. What do you guys think?

As far as your VIN he probably just wants to run a vehicle history report of some kind...this is very normal. I wouldn't worry about him stealing your car unless he seems like some shady creep.
As for mods...that's your call. Modifications never add to the value of a car unless you can find a buyer that appreciates them which is not often, and even then, the price of them is negotiable.
It sounds like you might be better off keeping it depending on what you are expecting for a return.

Could be someone just looking for a good price so they can flip it for a healthy profit. I ran into that when I advertised my Lotus a number of years ago. He pulled out the KBB and pointed out the price in there without any regard to the uniqueness of the car. Hold your ground.

Thanks. I don't mind him running a VIN check. I'm just worried it states my address and phone number. Doe anyone know if running a check pulls the owners personal information? I'm sure it states the number of owners, if it's salvaged, etc.
I do want to keep the car since I baby it so much. I still get compliments. The only reason why I want to sell it is because I want to get an S2000 and I have no room for it.

Doesn't matter if you want $40,000 for it, your price is your price. Respect the price or check your *** to the door.
You CAN consider your parts, they are YOURS you paid for them. This isn't a trade in and KBB isn't buying your car. Sell your parts on your car for what you want to sell them for and tell everybody else to take a hike.

He may also want the VIN to see what his insurance company might charge for it, although the fact that you have added custom parts to it may (?) also affect the premiums, too, particularly if it has aftermarket wheels and tires.
I would also run a KBB check on it myself and see if he is BS-ing you on the price. KBB gives a number of different prices for the same vehicle, depending on equipment, condition, mileage, and whether it is a private party. trade-in, or retail. You could also double-check with NADA, which is not as comprehensive as KBB but usually is in the same ball-park.

Considering 90% of Integras have been wrecked or stolen I think he is asking a valid question. You are fine.
Now there are people that take Vins from one car and slap on another but thats another story and usually reserved for cars at an auction and the donor car is wrecked.
