Arrow Hyundai Recalls Almost 1 Million

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Hyundai have initiated recalls on 963,305 vehicles as part of four separate campaigns. The first recall, blanketing over one half million late-model vehicles, is nationwide. The other three recalls, all corrosion-related on older vehicles, are limited to the regions of the country where salt is used to de-ice roads in the winters.

The most widespread recall, affecting up to 531,894 2005-2008 Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, and Veracruz models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V122000. It is focused on a malfunctioning stop lamp switch that may prevent brake lights from illuminating when the pedal is depressed (the same switch may also cause them to stay lit after the brakes are released).

The second recall, affecting up to 175,765 1999-2004 Sonata, XG300, and XG350 models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V124000. That recall, limited to America's so-called "Salt Belt" states, is centered around potentially excessive corrosion of the front sub-frame due to winter road salt applications. If unnoticed, the lower control arm may separate from its mount.

The third recall, affecting up to 170,610 2001-2003 Elantra and Tiburon models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V125000. Also limited to the salt-belt states, the affected component is a failed lower control arm due to excessive corrosion.

The fourth recall, affecting up to 85,036 2001-2003 Santa Fe models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V123000. Again limited to to the Salt Belt states, the recall is centered around the possible internal corrosion of the rear trailing arms in the vehicle's suspension.

In all four recalls, Hyundai dealers will inspect, repair, and replace defective or damaged parts at no cost to the owner. In some situations, rust-proofing material will be added to chassis areas to arrest the corrosion process. Owners of affected vehicles may contact Hyundai Customer Service at 1-800-633-5151, call the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or visit SAFERCAR.GOV. Press releases after the jump.

Component: SUSPENSION
Potential Number of Units Affected: 175765

Summary:
HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 175,765 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. DURING WINTER MONTHS, LARGE QUANTITIES OF SALT ARE USED TO DE-ICE ROADS IN THE SALT BELT STATES. ROAD SALT MAY RESULT IN INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME THAT IS PROGRESSIVE AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. YOU MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. THESE ARE INDICATIONS YOUR VEHICLE SHOULD BE SERVICED. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME. IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVER POWER TO THE WHEELS. THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL.

Consequence:
SEPARATION OF THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE IF NECESSARY THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. DURING WINTER MONTHS, LARGE QUANTITIES OF SALT ARE USED TO DE-ICE ROADS IN THE SALT BELT STATES. ROAD SALT MAY RESULT IN INTERNAL CORROSION AND THINNING OF THE STEEL IN THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS. THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS TO THE POINT WHERE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM'S UPPER AND LOWER PANELS BECOME PERFORATED. A PERFORATED FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY FRACTURE BETWEEN ITS BALL JOINT ATTACHMENT AND THE FORWARD AND REARWARD PIVOT ATTACHMENTS TO THE CHASSIS. THIS COULD AFFECT YOUR CONTROL OVER THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY.

Consequence:
REDUCED CONTROL OF THE FRONT WHEEL DIRECTION MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS FOR CORROSION DAMAGE. IF SPECIFIED LEVELS OF INTERNAL CORROSION DAMAGE ARE FOUND, THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEW FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS INCORPORATING ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. ROAD SALT MAY RESULT IN INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE REAR TRAILING ARMS, WHICH COULD LEAD TO THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE REAR TRAILING ARM STEEL. THE CORROSION IS PROGRESSIVE AND OCCURS OVER TIME. YOU MAY SEE OR FEEL SLIGHT TO MODERATE CHANGES IN VEHICLE OPERATION WHICH WILL INCREASE IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT REPAIRED. THESE CHANGES INCLUDE A LOWERING OF VEHICLE HEIGHT THAT CAN LEAD TO TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. YOU MAY ALSO NOTICE A CREAKING SOUND. IF THE CORROSION IS ALLOWED TO PROGRESS, THE REAR TRAILING ARM MAY FRACTURE WHILE DRIVING.

Consequence:
THE DEFORMATION AND LOSS OF STRUCTURAL RIGIDITY OF THE REAR TRAILING ARM MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.

Recalls happen...but corrosion of suspension components sounds sort of serious

You get what you pay for. If anyone ever wondered how Hyundai vehicles can be so cheap yet seemingly offer so much, this is one reason why. Hyundai cuts corners, some more noticeable than others. People complain about how Toyota and Lexus prices have risen and how Toyota/Lexus offers less value, but it's all relative and most people only look at the situation from a glance.

When you really analyze in detail every value aspect, then you see that for the most part, you get what you pay for.

Toyota/Lexus models (to the average person) appear to offer less value because of changes that cannot be seen. For example Toyota now uses a lot more ultra-high-tensile-strength steel than it did years ago. A lot of people are complaining about the big weight increase with the new 3rd gen RX, but a big reason for this weight increase is a stronger, more substantial frame for improved crash-worthiness and more sound insulation.

For all the criticism that VW vehicles sometimes achieve, once again you get what you pay for. With VW, you get an exceptional body and frame, and overall exceptional mechanicals on the car. You get very refined and solid interiors. It's mainly the electrics that cause problems. The reason that VW maintenance and parts can be a bit expensive is simply because VW uses more expensive materials or more elaborately engineered parts.

Related to this topic, the recent IIHS roof-strength test was a perfect example. VW did well in the test, as did Subaru. Both are brands that are considered a bit "pricey" compared to mainstream brands, but the IIHS shows that you get what you pay for. Toyota did decent in the test, and Honda (CR-V) and Kia did pretty bad.

I am not going to hold it against them to much, but I still wouldn't buy a hyundai. All companies have recalls, including our beautiful luxury sedans from Lexus

Definitely..... Look at all the consequences-- may lead to or increase the risk of a crash.

It's interesting too see 'you get what you paid for' comments as if some of you found a reason to bash hyundai again like old times. Any car company can have recalls but it's what they do about it that matters. Hyundai is doing what it can to fix the problem. I didn't hear too many negative comments when new benz's were going up in flames.

Yup. Even Lexus had a recall on some 2IS dealing with the fuel system.

As long as the recall is taken care of, I have no problems at all. A lot of design flaws aren't known right away and will take a while before the problem(s) surface.

You mean like fix it? This is when the service aspect comes into play. As for getting what you pay for, it's only logical, they have to sacrifice somewhere or else they'd go out of business.

Its not as simple as rather they will fix it or not, they ahve to fix it, its how they will fix it. For example, a friend of mine has a old Tacoma. It had a recall for body rust, when he bought the truck into the dealer, they found rust and offer to buy his truck back at book value. many other company would just try to fix it, but Toyota as a company really stand behind their product and have proven that over and over again.

People are saying "you get what you pay for" because Hyundai cuts corners, Yes every car company has had a recall before, but if it has to do with corrosion with the suspension system, than ...

I agree, everyone has recalls. I'm glad they found it before something dangerous happened (though maybe it has, I don't frequent Hyunadai forums).

The only ones I'm concerned with is the corrosion on the suspension parts. That one is probably due to the company still climbing the hill to Honda/Toyota standards. They are close, but just not quite there yet. Kind of like where Honda/Toyota was back in the 80s when everyone was bashing them for inferior metal. Anyway, I had the brake switch recall done on my Lexus so that seems pretty common for many car manufacturers.
