maybe it gives them less of a drag coefficient and more aerodynamics. Either way they look almost identical. why?

Besides aerodynamics and low CDs, they're meant to distinguish themselves from anything else on the road. That certainly was the case with the 2nd gen prius...there is no mistaking that vehicle.
I actually don't think the face of the car is that bad even - sporty for sure. The rear end is a little bland, but it isn't really sin-ugly like the Pilot or Accord sedan for instance. Just my opinion.
