After a few years I'll probaly purchase another CL. It was definately a beautiful car but mainteance was a killer. I thought a CLS would satisfy me because the exterior is so nice but the CLS interior wise/comfort is no competition for an CL.

Nice !! but I still like the design of the previous generation CL-class better, I don't particularly like the front and rear of this current CL. The side-view looks good though.
I am usually more of a coupe person, but I prefer to just have the S-class(particular the facelifted 2010 version) rather than this CL because of the looks, which is rare for me.

The CL500 has the exact same 5.5L engine as the CL550, N.America is the only place in the world they call the car CL550 (same for the S550 and SL550), they still call them CL500/S500/sl500 in the rest of the world because they see the "500" designation as a tradition. But you see, America is the place where the bigger is better ...
Good observation about our market, Benz has to protect that "image".
Close 2nd favorite. I think its fabulous as well.

This is my least favorite S-class coupe ever, I don't like those weird looking headlights in particular ...

"Plain" is such a strong word. I think it looks conservative but there is a hefty focus on elegance. Mercedes in the 1980s were experts in designing elegant but heavily understated cars. They still do this today in my opinion, though their design focus has shifted to involving more modern elements that might not age that gracefully as their older designs did.
Also, I'm a sucker for the '80s.
