FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 33,952 vehicles in April, a 14 percent decline versus April 2008, in an industry expected to be down more than 30 percent.
"We had strong sales of our Accent and Alabama-built Sonata, up 26 and 7 percent, respectively, and the best sales month yet for Genesis," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America vice president of national sales. "Most importantly, we've delivered a 20 percent increase in retail market share. Hyundai outperformed every brand in retail market share increase in the first quarter, and that strong retail performance continues into our traditionally strong spring/summer selling season."
All new Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by America's Best Warranty. In addition, the Hyundai Assurance Program is now offered on all new Hyundai's leased or purchased at a participating Hyundai dealership. Hyundai Assurance provides protection from certain income-changing life events, allowing consumers to return their vehicles in the first year of ownership without impacting their credit histories, while covering vehicle depreciation (negative equity) up to $7,500.
Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co. of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced by more than 780 dealerships nationwide.

All-New Soul Records Strong Sales and Sparks Additional Consumer Interest in Bold New Designs
IRVINE, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced April sales of 25,606 units, and year-to-date sales of 94,499 total units. The critically acclaimed Soul, Kia's all-new and uniquely styled urban passenger vehicle, recorded robust sales of 3,228 units in April and 4,508 total units since its arrival in February.
With a series of new product introductions on the horizon, including the upcoming Forte compact sedan and its Koup sibling, KMA's vehicle lineup is undergoing an aggressive, design-led evolution aimed at attracting new customers to the brand and growing market share, despite the lackluster economy. The Forte sedan goes on sale at Kia retailers nationwide this summer, followed closely by the Koup, which was unveiled at last month's New York International Auto Show.
"Soul's strong early performance is a clear indication that its eye-catching design and wide array of personalization options is resonating with consumers and bringing new buyers into our showrooms," said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, KMA. "Style-driven vehicles such as the Soul and upcoming Forte sedan and Forte Koup mark a turning point for the Kia brand, allowing buyers to make an emotional connection with our vehicles."

I am not sure what % you're talking about, but just looking at April '09, plus YTD :
3 series down 47.3 % compared to a year ago, 5-series only down 9.7 % for April, that's a huge difference between the 2 models, also big difference in YTD %.
And from what I remember from posting these numbers for the last few years, before the market collapse, the 3-series is an average 10K per month model, whereas the 5-series about 5K per month in sales, so even when you look at the long term numbers instead of just one month, the 5-series is holding up much better than the 3 ...

Good for Hyundai. The Genesis may not be quite the home run the original LS was but I'll bet GM, ChryCo, and Ford wish they could make that vehicle at that price point. OK, so maybe that's not much comfort. But the Genesis is no joke. There will be fanboys for all the brands but it is apparent that you shouldn't dismiss Hyundai out of hand when it looks at a niche.

Besides, I always think it is not really fair to compare 3-series sales in this class to the C-class sales, yes they are both the entry level class, but the 3-series call all their variants the 3-series, whereas the CLK coupe and convertible, which are C-class based, are somehow not included, and they should be IMO.
Whoever started doing these sales comparison here a few years ago is a BMW owner and we have been comparing them this way ever since, MAYBE that's 's one of the reasons.
The fact they gave them a different name and not just C-class coupes and convertibles(like BMW) is really not a good reason to exclude them. So I never really believe the 3-series is that much more dominant over the C-class in the first place, even though they should still be the top seller even if the CLK's are included. But the CLK's are expensive, they can be E-class prices, they always have a V8 even excluding the AMG version.
Of course, the ES with just one sedan model cannot hold up as well, I think more variations in models with more choices help, it's like not having all your eggs in one basket ... It's never too meaningful to look at just one month, but percentagewise, the ES actually declined less this month compared to last year than the 3-series :

I guess the numbers are here to support the following article. I wonder if it is a safe assumption about Ford taking sales from ChryCo and GM? Whatever, good for them. This thread is going to remain one of the "must visit" ones going forward. We are obviously getting to a period where ChryCo won't make cars for two months and GM is going to get into it's 9 week rolling shutdown. This will run down inventory which would normally firm up pricing but with the bankruptcies, who knows what will happen?
Auto sales fall in April; Ford gains market share from Chrysler
Sales of the 2010 Ford Fusion helped Ford gain market share.
DETROIT — Detroit's Big Three is becoming Ford (F) and the other two.
While its rivals stay afloat with billions in government aid, Ford grabbed a bigger slice of the American car market in April with record sales of its fuel-efficient Fusion. Those results pushed it past Toyota to retake its post as the nation's No. 2 car seller.
Even though Ford's monthly sales tumbled 32% from a year earlier, it captured 16% of the total market. Most of those gains came at the expense of General Motors (GM) and Chrysler, which unlike Ford are dependent on federal help.
Overall U.S. auto sales reported Friday fell 34% from a year earlier. Automakers sold about 820,000 light vehicles in April, about 38,000 fewer than in March but still a big improvement over January's 27-year low.
"It seems we're bouncing on the bottom of the bathtub, but it's somewhat stabilized," Chrysler Vice Chairman Jim Press said in a conference call with journalists. "Maybe we've figured out where the bottom is."
Chrysler, which filed for a government-engineered bankruptcy Thursday, reported the sharpest decline among major automakers, falling 48%.
GM, the largest American automaker with 21% of the market, posted its smallest decline in four months at 34%.
Ford sold a record number of Fusions — 18,321 — with the unveiling of its 2010 gas and hybrid versions of the car.
"Fusion appears to have broken the hold on the midsize sedan segment," said Ken Czubay, Ford's vice president of sales and marketing. Ford began selling the Fusion with its 2005 model.
Still, sales of the rival Camry, Toyota's popular sedan, totaled about 25,000 last month, while Honda's Accord sedan sold more than 29,000.
Toyota Motor (TM), which had overtaken Ford as No. 2 in U.S. sales, fell behind its rival in sales for the first time in months. Ford got a lift from its line of midsize cars that burn less gasoline.
Ford sold 133,979 light vehicles in April, compared with 195,665 for the same month of 2008. The figures exclude sales of heavy and low cab forward trucks. Sales rose from March to April, with Ford selling 2,878 more cars.
"Based on dealer commentary, we believe this was at least partially due to customers shifting to Ford based on concerns about a potential bankruptcy filing at General Motors and Chrysler," said Brett Hoselton, auto analyst for KeyBanc Capital Markets.
April marked the sixth time in seven months that Ford gained retail market share.
Chrysler lawyers made their first appearance in federal bankruptcy court Friday. GM has a June 1 deadline to restructure or face bankruptcy.
Press attributed the automaker's April decline to a steep drop in sales to fleet customers. Retail sales fell at a much smaller 39%, he said.
He dismissed the notion that fears about the company going into bankruptcy kept consumers away from dealerships.
"Maybe some people have some worries about the longevity of the company," he said. "Well, heck, now the president of the United States, the U.S. government, is not only going to back our warranties, they're going to be an investor in forming our new company."
Still, Chrysler is clinging to just a 9% share of the U.S. market, down from about 12% a year ago.
Meanwhile, Toyota reported a 42% drop in April sales. Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, was weighed down by declining sales across the board and a 62% slide in sales of its Prius hybrid.
The Japanese automaker is phasing out the existing Prius to make way for its 2010 model, which goes on sale in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
Ford's midsize Fusion model is a viable competitor against Toyota's popular Camry, with the 2010 models getting praise for quality, safety and fuel economy. More than 40% of the 2010 Fusions sold are hybrids that get 41 miles per gallon.
Meanwhile, GM's car sales fell more sharply than its trucks, a trend that goes against the federal government's goal to boost sales of smaller, cleaner cars.
Japanese automaker Honda Motor (HMC) posted a 25% drop in sales.
Nissan Motor (NSANY), reported a 38% drop in its sales. The No. 3 Japanese automaker saw double-digit sales declines across both its car and truck segments.
Subaru broke a streak of sales increases, reporting a 6.7% decline in volumes for April, hurt by a drop in volumes of its Outback wagon and Impreza sedan.
The Japanese automaker had been bucking brutal trends in the auto market. It was the only major automaker to report a sales increase in 2008.

There are people who want to buy American and I do suspect that Ford will pick up sales. The lower than expected decline for the general will probably go away after their bankruptcy. The numbers will certainly tell the tale about the ability to sell vehicles from bankruptcy.

Hyundai Motor America Reports April 2009 Sales
