Default Kia Motors America Announces April Sales

All-New Soul Records Strong Sales and Sparks Additional Consumer Interest in Bold New Designs

IRVINE, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced April sales of 25,606 units, and year-to-date sales of 94,499 total units. The critically acclaimed Soul, Kia's all-new and uniquely styled urban passenger vehicle, recorded robust sales of 3,228 units in April and 4,508 total units since its arrival in February.

With a series of new product introductions on the horizon, including the upcoming Forte compact sedan and its Koup sibling, KMA's vehicle lineup is undergoing an aggressive, design-led evolution aimed at attracting new customers to the brand and growing market share, despite the lackluster economy. The Forte sedan goes on sale at Kia retailers nationwide this summer, followed closely by the Koup, which was unveiled at last month's New York International Auto Show.

"Soul's strong early performance is a clear indication that its eye-catching design and wide array of personalization options is resonating with consumers and bringing new buyers into our showrooms," said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing, KMA. "Style-driven vehicles such as the Soul and upcoming Forte sedan and Forte Koup mark a turning point for the Kia brand, allowing buyers to make an emotional connection with our vehicles."

Kia Motors Product Line

Kia Motors America offers a dynamic and diverse product line of 12 vehicles to meet the needs of all lifestyles. The vehicle line features the functional Rondo CUV and award-winning Sedona minivan along with a wide variety of popular passenger cars, including the refined Amanti full-size sedan, purposeful Optima midsize sedan, versatile and compact Spectra and Spectra5, and sporty yet fuel-efficient Rio and Rio5 subcompacts. The vehicle line also features the affordably luxurious Borrego, rugged Sorento and value-packed Sportage SUVs. The 2010 Soul further complements the lineup as it arrives in dealerships, as will the 2010 Forte sedan and Forte Koup.

Not sure anyone is all that interested but we have ChryCo starting two months shutdown Monday and GM has nine weeks of rolling shutdowns coming up shortly. They keep talking about the need to burn off inventory but it is going to be interesting to see the numbers for the next three or four months. We constantly bring up supply shortages but to be honest, the kinds of vehicles that appeal to us here aren't the position of GM and ChryCo in the next few months. We are probably going to see the data first hand about vehicle sales when a company is in bankruptcy.

Honda sales were down “just” 24.5 percent, the least of any large brand so far.

Both Chevrolet and Ford outsold Toyota for the first time in 2009. Toyota’s 112,345 cars and trucks couldn’t match Chevrolet’s 115,265 or Ford’s 116,263.

Chevy’s Traverse crossover sold a reasonable 8,2004 units, its best month this year, while HHR, Tahoe and Express passenger van sales were all up, as well. Overall GM sales were down 33.7 percent to 173,007 units.

Ford’s Fusion, including the 2009 and redesigned 2010, which recently hit dealers, had its best-ever April with 18,321 units sold.

The bad
Mitsubishi’s sales were down 55.9 percent to 3,919 - which works out to an average of just over nine cars sold per dealer.

Though sales across the board at GM weren’t too bad, all things considered, three of the four brands it will jettison or close posted greater than 50 percent drops. Hummer sales were down 61.6 percent, Saturn down 56.4 percent and Pontiac down 54.9 percent. Given GM has announced the closure of Pontiac, we’d expect May sales to be much lower than April for the brand.

Sales of the Smart fortwo were down an incredible 49.9 percent compared to the same time last year, when the Smart was still a fresh and new vehicle. Smart sales are still up 2 percent for the year, but is this the beginning of the cooling-off many predicted for the brand?

Toyota Prius sales were down 61.5 percent, reflecting lower inventories ahead of the all-new Prius’ launch in May, as well as reduced demand for hybrid cars as gas prices hover under $2.00 per gallon.

Lincoln sales were down 42.2 percent, a 9 percent drop-off compared to March’s 33 percent slide.

The ugly
Acura, down 32.3 percent to 8,813
Buick, down 29.5 percent to 8,928
Cadillac, down 41.9 percent to 8,337
Chevrolet, down 26.7 percent to 115,265
Ford, down 30 percent to 116,263
GMC, down 35.7 percent to 20,467
Honda, down 24.5 percent to 92,216
Hummer, down 61.6 percent to 913
Infiniti, down 48.3 percent to 4,932
Lexus, down 39.2 percent to 14,195
Lincoln, down 42.2 percent to 5,973
Mercedes-Benz, down 28.1 percent to 14,565
Mercury, down 40.7 percent to 7,662
Mitsubishi, down 55.9 percent to 3,919
Nissan, down 36.3 percent to 42,258
Pontiac, down 54.9 percent to 10,838
Saab, down 43.5 percent to 892
Saturn, down 56.4 percent to 7,367
Smart, down 49.9 percent to 1,345
Toyota, down 42.2 percent to 112,345
Volvo, down 36.9 percent to 4,503
Mike, Andrew.........Any word in April from Subaru?

Last year, Subaru was the only significant auto manufacturer in the American market to report sales up for the whole year (2008). It will be interesting to see if that is keeping up through this spring....and the recession.

"We had strong sales of our Accent and Alabama-built Sonata, up 26 and 7 percent, respectively, and the best sales month yet for Genesis," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America vice president of national sales. "Most importantly, we've delivered a 20 percent increase in retail market share. Hyundai outperformed every brand in retail market share increase in the first quarter, and that strong retail performance continues into our traditionally strong spring/summer selling season."

All new Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by America's Best Warranty. In addition, the Hyundai Assurance Program is now offered on all new Hyundai's leased or purchased at a participating Hyundai dealership. Hyundai Assurance provides protection from certain income-changing life events, allowing consumers to return their vehicles in the first year of ownership without impacting their credit histories, while covering vehicle depreciation (negative equity) up to $7,500.

did they combine tiburon and genesis coupe together? must be because 3300 for outgoing tib is way too much even after $3000 rebate.

Yes, I did miss it, Andrew. Thanks. The American-market numbers look pretty good, compared to most other manufacturers. But I don't think the 2010 Legacy/Outback, totally redesigned and due this fall, will do as good as the 2009's are doing. Already some Subaru dealers are reporting a sales run on the existing 2009's because of the new (and untested) CVT that will be in the 2010's with the base 2.5 engine. They also will lack a coolant temperature gauge, from cost-cutting.

first off, i want to thank all the awesome compilation of information and analysis by those who posted it here. wow. THANK YOU!

some thoughts...

lexus - besides the rx things are pretty grim. 2 GS's per dealer sold?

bmw - how the heck are they selling so many 5 series?

mercedes - decent

hyundai/kia - WOW - really impressive sales numbers

toyota - sliding down - i really think hyundai/kia is taking a toll, but on a bright note, the prius is the 19th best selling vehicle, which is amazing

ford - hanging in there, and while down bad, the new f-150 is still the top dog

Yes, mainly driven by strong (new gen) Forester sales.

Road and Track (May issue), in a First Drive article on the new Jag XF/XK series, mentioned that Jaguar (now a division of Tata Motors), worldwide, in 2008 posted a 7% sales increase over 2007, but, of course, that doesn't necessarily apply to American- market Jags.

The A6 actually outsells the 5-Series and E-Class globally, for some reason, us Americans prefer the 5 series and the E-class. MB and BMW does do a much better job in advertising in the US. They also have a very aggressive leasing program and incentive program. Also, I think a lot of Americans still associate today's Audi with the Audis from the early 1990s which was very unreliable.

A6 managed to outsell 5 or E (if it's true, please show us a link-), only because VW has a long term relationship with Chinese gov. They can sell 100,000 a year in China this year(last year was 84,000) (for those officers).(most of them are A6 2.0T, which didn't count as a mid-level luxury car by America's standard)
the best selling 5 in America sell around 50,000 a year.

So the number isn't automatically arguing that A6 is a better car.
