I'd like to note that it is true that nowadays you get the best deals and great discounts on new cars, but that kind of becomes irrelevant if you have you old car that you're trying to sell or trade in. Whatever you save on the new car, you gonna lose it on your old car.

well in my case, my trade in is a 89' Acura legend with 250k miles. Worth less 1k, heck i can't even sell that thing.
Big if Congress were to offer 3k for trade in any bucket, I'll do it in a heart beat. It work for most people in that situation.

Of course there are any other number of ways that numbers can be massaged by a dealer and people don't know any better or else don't want to mention it when bragging about the deal they got.
'Yeah I got a killer price on my new car but they took my to the cleaners on my trade in.'
Or
'Yeah it was a 30k dollar car after 5000 dollars in ridiculously over marked up dealer accessories and warranty programs that cost them 1000 bucks to install and add... they gave me 4000 off the accessories plus 5000 off the car (because it was a demo w/ 2k HARD miles on it) so I got a "30k dollar car" for 21' (nevermind the fact that it was really a 25k sticker price car with 5 grand in crap, 3 grand between invoice and sticker, and 2 grand in depreciation and they really got it for about what it was worth, at best).
I find this is the case many times when I prod deeper in the the deals some people brag to me about. There's always these little 'gotchas'.
