As for 4-Cylinder engines, there are so many great choices I don't even see the big deal for some of you, unless you were towing. Even older cars had great 4-bangers for sporty purposes.

I'm sorry, but to see this thrown around so often is disheartening. I am frankly sick and tired of hearing this worn over nonsense, becuase there's nothing substantiative to continue propping this one up. And sorry, a picture of some Golf sitting in a lot that had a fire hardly translates into definitive "evidence". For someone who is so against perceptions, I would have hoped you would toss this old musty one over as well. The reality is, this is garbage at its best, sorry.
Like it or not, VW is overall the 25th most reliable of 34 auto brands (Audi is 22nd, FWIW). That they've moved up 5 spots since last year does not negate the fact that they're well into the bottom third among all manufacturers. Taking the Jetta as an example since it's a volume model (and it would be unfair to choose the abysmal Touareg), the ONLY iterations in the past ten years that have held up even remotely well in terms of electrical reliability are the '08 turbo, '06 turbodiesel, and the '07-'08 5-cylinder. Cars that new should have NO electrical gremlins whatsoever.
That said (and getting back on topic), if I'm required to get a 4-cylinder, that saves some money in terms of purchase price and fuel cost that can be applied to repairs, so the 2.0T is back in the running for me, probably in an A4 or A5 (presumably they would offer it should the premise of this thread come about). S2000 and WRX STi would also be contenders. The HS250h would be the final entrant, for me.
