Question If the government says "you must own a 4 cylinder" what would you buy?

Lets say your next car has to be a 4 cylinder b/c the government (you know the people that know better ) says so. Since they are the government (you know the people that are some of our brightest) they don't say what kind of 4 cylinder. It can be a SUV or a sports car.

What do you buy? It can be any 4 cylinder produced in the past and anything in the near future (less than 3 years).

What do you drive?

Just thinking of going back to a 4-cylinder is making my head hurt.

Depending on what kind of car I wanted I would choose:

Sport: Subaru WRX STi

Luxury: Close tie between HS250h and Audi A3

I drive whatever I choose, but that might mean paying the price even more (including a big gas guzzler tax). Currently there are no 4-bangers that meet my personal criteria.

HS250h even though I dislike the exterior its the only hybrid other then a Prius I like. Plus its one of the only entry-level luxury hybrids

It be nice to see if Porsche comes out with an inline-4 something on the lines of the 356/550. Seeing they for sure can have like 1.5-2.5L inline-4 with some power now.

I might go for the 4-banger Venza.

And a 4-cylinder BMW S1000RR sounds great right now...

The 2.0T, admittedly, is a temptation, and a hoot to drive, especially with the DSG, but VWs and Audis concern me with their electrical problems.

Evo, STi or A4 2.0T would get my votes.

Not the Evo or STi? Uncomfortable, yes, but they go like stink.
