Must you stop to turn?

Yeah...I don't mind if the person is signaling and they are coming almost to a complete stop into a parking lot.
I hate when people don't signal, and ride their brakes, until the last possible second and hop over into the suicide lane and turn, hitting their signal AFTER they are in the suicide lane.

The thread on passing in a residential area got me to thinking about the activity I hate the most when I'm following someone.
Please, for the love of (insert deity here) don't come to an almost complete stop to make a right hand turn into a street or parking lot. I'm closing on you at 25 - 30 MPH. If you continue to roll through the turn we are all good. I know you have to slow down but don't insist on coming to an almost complete stop so you don't subject your passengers to > .3 G cornering forces!

You must also remember that, in most cases, if you hit someone from behind, no matter how he or she was driving, you will be held at fault, not him or her......something to think about when you feel that people need to clear out of your way ASAP.
Now, with that out of the way, if you (as I suspect) are referring to unmarked intersections or parking-lot entrances, how fast someone turns of the main road into the unmarked lot entrance will depend on many factors......road conditions, familiarity with the road and local adresses, type of vehicle (tall SUVs, of course, can't be whipped around sharp corners like a sports car), the amount of traffic coming out of the lot, and a number of other things.

Personally, I'm fine with the slowing down part, its just that in my residential areas, people get close to the curb, then pull a wide turn to turn right (swerve 1/2 way into the lane next to the turn lane). It confuses me as well as given me some very close calls since theres plenty of room for a person to pass while they're turning . They won't curb their wheels at the distance they are from a curb, but taking such a wide turn? que?

i can only agree with you depending on the area....
here in NYC.. some guy driving a Van almost ran me over coming off a stop sign... the dude was riding on his breaks from the stop sign and i can't blame him because there's ALWAYS car parked on the side of both streets making it harder to see clearance...
thank god he stop in time, i was on my motorcycle... i saw him in the last second because there's a big delivery Van park on the corner, blocking my view to see him..
when i drive and coming out of a stop sign. due to cars/Vans parked everywhere. i creep a foot at a time until i see clear road ahead... sound like a old man driving but that's the way it is...

I slow way down going into driveways because I don't want to rip the Veilside bumper off. Anyone who doesn't like it will have to manage. I am aware of who's around me and endeavor to stay the hell out of the way of other vehicles when I'm doing this.

here's why everyone should not roll through a right turn.
1. to avoid the car making a left, who happens not to see you
2. to avoid the car exiting the lot who doesn't see you
3. to avoid the pedestrian who doesn't see you
Patience can save you thousands in fines and lawsuits and premiums. Put those Brembo's to good use

It really depends on the street that person is turning into. My store has a small driveway to turn. When theres a car waiting to come out, it doesn't leave much room to turn in. So what happens is the car trying to turn in has to come to almost a complete stop. The cars behind him almost always honk their horns, slam the brakes or rear ends the car. I see it almost everyday. I've witnessed 3 cars get rear ended just this year already. 2 didn't even involve the car turning in but the car behind slammed the brakes and got hit from behind.
This is actually one of the few things that I don't have road rage about.

In example #1 the idiot is the left turn guy, not the right turn guy. He'd also be the one considered at fault without a doubt.
In example #2 and 3 your diagram makes the assumption that I have poor visibility of the lot before turning. If I can't see what I'm turning in to then of course I'm not going to out-drive my vision.

HAHA this must be an IL thing I run into this all over and I can appreciate what the OP is talking about. Its one thing to be safe but its another to be overly cautious. Overly cautious drivers cause accidents IMO...

I turn really slow, almost at a complete stop.
HOWEVER, I have my blinker on long before the turn as a warning, unlike those people who slows to a stop with no warning then turn on blinkers after they have stopped... I've come close to hitting them many times.
I turn slow because I dont want to ruin my lip or rims with unseen dips or curbs in lots and stuff.

i checked the OP's location, and I also assumed it was an IL thing.
you guys don't have right turn laws eh?
overly cautious, with signal flashing 500 ft prior to turn is ok.
the people behind need to stop tailgaiting, texting, putting makeup on.....

Come to IL then tell me what you think Trust me the ones that are overly cautious in this state cause accidents(not just turns)...for the same reason there is a MINIMUM speed limit on the expressway/toll roads here
#29
Apples and oranges. Minimum speeds on expressways have nothing to do with the arguement............or the thread topic. People don't suddenly slow way down and turn into parking lots and side streets off of 65 and 70-MPH freeways.

^ haha yes they do! I am on these roads everyday. I used to travel 40k + miles in one year If I could record one days worth of traveling these streets it would be an eye opener.
Just curious does everyone feel going 2mph around a turn is safe or dangerous?
