Default 1936 Bugatti could break Ferarri auction record

By DALE JEWETT

A 1936 Bugatti Type 57C coupe, built as a gift for Ettore Bugatti, will be on the block at Gooding & Co.’s auction during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this August.

Auction officials say they think this special Bugatti could break the record for the most expensive car sold at an auction, topping the $12.2 million paid recently for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.

The Bugatti is in great condition, as the factory took pains to protect it from damage during World War II. Even though Ettore died in 1947, the Bugatti factory maintained the car and upgraded some of its components. The factory finally sold the car in 1950, and none of the owners since has had any restoration done to the car.

The Gooding auction also will have a number of race cars from the collection of Don Lyons, including a 1967 Gurney Eagle Indy car driven by Denny Hulme, and Mario Andretti’s 1985 Lola Indy car.
