Default DIY oil change lowers insurance reimbursement when totaled?

when you total your car, insurance asks for maintenance papers.

if you DIY oil change, you have nothing to show for it.

what do you do here?

Show them your receipt for oil, and filters. You can't be buying those things for no reason if you are not DIYing.

If the car was totaled in an accident, why would oil changes matter?

I think proof of purchase should be enough. I guess there are benefits to letting the dealer service you car.

Same hear. When my previous GS was totaled, they mentioned nothing about oil changes.

Did they ask you, or you just think they ask?

The time and effort for an insurance company to review maintenance records to determine the "value" of the car (whether it was well maintained or poorly maintained) probably, in the long run, so far outweighs any savings the company would have by trying to low ball payments by claiming that the car was in "fair" or "poor" condition.

Not a problem to worry about.

better not show those jiffy lube receipts. those will even devalue the car even more

that's exactly it.

after you total your car, they use the oil change receipts to determine the condition your car is in: poor, fair, excellent.

if you don't have any oil change papers, they will categorize your car as "poor"ly maintained, and give you less money.

I guess buying the oil might be acceptable.....? who knows.
but you still have no hard proof that you changed the oil. I wonder if they'll make a big deal out of it.

I'm pretty sure they'd accept jiffy lube receipts.

but yes, AAA did ask for receipts.

Wow something doesnt sound right honestly. Like I said when I wrecked the Porsche I was never asked for anything like that and I was talking with a of my buddies about this and they too have never been asked for any of the sort, and one of them has totaled 3 cars lol and got full value..............sounds like the insurance company is trying to get off as cheap as possible. Note to self stay away from AAA insurance.

If you have proof of maintenance, they will review what you have and change the condition of what they see. If your car doesn't look like it's been maintained well, of course you will get dinged for it. But if you have the receipts or documentation or a log to prove your maintenance habits, they will condition it accordingly.

So answer your question...the simple answer is NO, granted you have the documentation to back it up. If you have no documentation...you're SOL.

I guess it depends on the relatioship with your agent. When I wrecked my GS the only receipts they asked for was for aftermarket parts.

I save the receipts for the Mobil1 I buy at Costco, and the filter (with part number on the receipt!) and keep it with all my other paperwork on the car.

I write on the receipt: 35K oil change, 40K oil change, etc.

I can't imagine it would be an issue.
