Transit Police pulled over a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday and took the passenger into custody.
Two officers were on their way back to their office around 3 p.m. Wednesday when they saw something suspicious in a late-model Mercedes heading east in the HOV lane on Highway 1.
Consts. Mike Valente and Bruce Shipley pulled over the car near the Sprott exit and, to their surprise, found that the "passenger" was actually the top half of a mannequin, dressed in a grey hooded sweatshirt.
The officers seized the female mannequin and her hoodie, and issued the 28-year-old Abbotsford man driving the car a $109 ticket.
“That is a first for me," said Const. Shipley, a three-year member of the police service, in a news release. “Everyone is in a hurry these days, but the HOV lane is there for a reason — you get caught misusing it and you could be fined. Drive safely and drive smart."

Which reminds me of another item from the past.
It's called Buddy on Demand, a blow-up guy that will help women driving alone to feel more secure, has been introduced by a British insurance agency that caters to women drivers.
Buddy fits in a car's glove compartment; at the flick of a switch, he inflates and rides shotgun. When the woman has finished using him, she pulls the plug - and he goes back into the glove box.
According to research by Buddy on Demand's creator, insurer Sheilas' Wheels, 82 percent of women feel safer with someone sitting in the car beside them and nearly a half don't like driving alone in the dark.

Dummies, blow-up dolls, and mannequins in the back and right-front seats to increase "occupants" are nothing new. Here in VA, we've had HOV lanes for some 25 years, and that trick has been used since Day One. In fact, I myself predicted that kind of stuff when the first HOV road opened up in this area.....and told some police friends that I knew at the time to watch for them.
