Post Bicycles Outselling Cars In 2009

"The bad news keeps coming for the US Autos industry. In the first quarter of 2009, bicycles outsold cars and trucks.

Despite being down more than 30% on last year, bikes are outselling cars, which are experiencing a larger decline. Many see the again rising cost of gasoline, as well as the not so good press coverage of the failing car industry, are making people think twice about buying a motor. The large savings from riding a bike over short distances rather than driving can help consumer confidence and support economic recovery.

Even longer trips are becoming more accessible for cyclists. Visionary activists are creating opportunities for cyclists to safely travel longer distances. Not only are there cost savings from such local and intercity rides, but there are environmental benefits too, especially in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. While an average solo car trip or airplane ride emits more than 1 pound of CO2 per mile, bicycling or walking emits close to zero. If we need to travel hundreds of miles, there are great low-carbon strategies for travel that include mass transit and carpooling, keeping our average emissions less than 1/2 a pound of CO2 per mile."[/I]

yeah, that works real well for people commuting to work several miles in nice clothes in 90 degree weather with humidity.

and that articles... 1lb vs. 0.5lbs of CO2 / mile... how the hell does ANYONE know whether it makes ANY difference at all?

especially as they drive by the coal powered power station belching vast amounts of stuff into the air.

or how about people using "mosquito magnets" in their back yard. ALL THEY DO is emit CO2. or people who like charcoal barbecues - should they be banned too? i know there was talk of banning them in california.

and how about the skankiest of all vehicles - SCHOOL BUSES!

Dont humans emit CO2 when breathing? I mean you breath either way, so its unavoidable, but making its middle of June and here in NYC the temperatures still haven't hit more than 75 degree. Its the coldest June in my memory, must be caused by global warming.

My family just bought two new bicycles, one black and one blue. We love them.

When I move in September I'll be a LOT closer to work. I'll probably bike to work on nicer days (not snowing, not raining and not arctic cold) to save on fuel. We have showers at the gym in our work so I could just shower when I get to work.

It's not for everyone but if it helps your own wallet why not?
