I actually really like the 5-speed auto transmission in our 2005 V6 4runner. It has a very nice positive shift feeling, is very good about gear selection and not being too 'shifty', and supposedly never needs a transmission fluid change. I'm not saying an extra gear wouldn't be an improvement, but I'm at least thankful it's not like the awful automatic transmissions that were used in the ES300/330 and RX300/330 loaners I used to get from the Lexus dealer.

I'd almost be nervous that if they used a 6-speed auto in the 4runner it might not be as good.

thanks for the info!! It's probably wise for Toyota to save the 4.6 V8 and maybe a 6-spd tranny for the GX to help differentiate. I hope the new Runner is a bit more aerodynamic/modern looking while retaining its off-road capability. can't wait to hear more & finally see the damn thing, lol

Looking at the Tundra, the new 4.6L is more efficient than the 4.0L V6 powetrain.

Thats because the 4.6 offer DUAL vvti, and extra gear and exhaust gas recirculation.

I wish they'd revert the design just a little bit backwards. The late 90's 4runners are still the best, in my humble opinion.

Assuming you don't need to drive on public streets/pavement.

You couldn't be more wrong...

3rd Gen T4R is one of the best off road Runners you can get.

why offer the 4 cyl in one measly trim, and why is it still a freakin 4-spd?? that won't sell for *****, and seems like it just adds cost/complication to the lineup. seriously, a 4-spd??!! should be a 6-spd, it's a 2010, not a 1990

edit - I'm very interested in the 4wd v6/5AT for the record, but again, an oddball drivetrain for 1 specific trim seems silly

Agree. I had a 2001 4x4 Sport and it was an amazing truck. Ridiculously reliable and completely unstoppable off road. It also felt very stable on road and I'm a relatively aggressive driver and never had any close calls. I have also driven several Explorers which didn't feel nearly as stable or solid as the 4Runner on smooth pavement.

Its amazing that nothing has leaked out only one month prior to production. I would have thought some scans of dealer brochures or something would have surfaced

I guess I am a bit impatient.

I agree. That is my favorite 4Runner generation. More so with the 99-02 model update.
