Default Thoughts on rear mounted turbos

What are you thoughts on turbos that are mounted on the rear of the cars near the mufflers?

here's a turboed ISF with this setup.

Problems with remote mount kits is that they add more weight to a system because there's a lot more piping to route back to the engine. The turbos aren't as efficient because they have to push the compressed air further so more lag.

For some applications there's just no room for turbos under the hood so remote mount kits are better.

A number of C6 Corvettes run a twin turbo set up in this manner. Outstanding performance with no issues..

i thought the "lag" on medium-sized remote mount turbos was a myth and that the current generation doesn't suffer from this problem?

Same location like any other front mount intercooler.

no lag. the turbos and piping are tuned for each other.

intercooler isnt needed....you CAN add one tho.

been there...done that, a loong time ago....working on a hyperdrive and a teleporter now

For Real?? No intercooler? it doesnt get hot?

also isnt it kinda ridiculous that the exhaust has to go all the way to the back??

"Air" doesnt stay hot for very long. the pipe itself acts as an intercooler on a basic, low (5-8lbs) boost setup. An intercooler will increase lag on a small turbo....

what difference does it make? The velocity doesnt change much and its constant.

I have a pretty big intercooler on my setup

Don't quite understand your question. Doesn't the exhaust have to go all the way back anyway, even without a turbo? And, no, turbo setups don't *have* to be intercooled. Intercooled turbos run better with higher boost but it's not an absolute requirement. Rear mounted turbos could run quite well without an intercooler because, in affect, all the piping running from the turbos to the intake, under the car, act quite well as an intercooler.

I guess I fell for the myths about rear mounted turbos. There is more weight to the system though but they're on the rear wheels (if you're a RWD setup which your F is).

Just drive over speed bumps very carefully.

you'll be fine with a lowered car. Ive been rollin like that for a few years now with no problems.

Just wanna add one more thing before I bail outta this thread: DO NOT just go and add a turbo and long piping to a car and think thats how its done. Lots of math goews into setting one of these systems up. I ran thru a couple engines getting mine 'just right'.

so if one was interested in a remote-mount kit you wouldn't advise to DIY, but rather buy a pre-fabbed or partially fabbed kit?

I was thinking about the back pressure of the exhaust, but i guess a normal turbo car would be the same.
