2008 Bmw 1-Series and 3-Series recalled in the U.S. due to possible side airbag problem

A recall for the 2008 model BMW 1-Series and 3-Series has been announced. BMW North America cited a possible side airbag problem caused by an incorrect crimp connector that was used on the side airbag and belt tensioner wiring.

As published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, the official notice states: “BMW is recalling MY 2008 1-Series and 3-Series passenger cars. Incorrect crimp connectors may have been used on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring. As a result sufficient contact between the crimp connectors and the corresponding plug may not occur which could lead to an increase in the electrical resistance of that connection…If that happened, it would be possible for the side air bag and/or safety belt tensioner not to deploy and will not be able to properly protect an occupant, increasing the risk of injuries.”

2009 Bmw X5 and X6 models recalled due to rear brake discs problem

Fast on the heels of its announcement to recall its 1-Series and 3-Series MY2008, BMW has issued three more recall notices; this time for the BMW X5 and X6 model year 2009 and the R1200 RT motorbike MY 2007-2009. Issues with the braking system were cited.

According to the official notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, “The rear brake discs may not have been manufactured according to specifications. As a result, a reduction in braking performance at the affected rear wheel could occur.” NHTSA explained that in an extreme case, a crash could result if the affected rear brake disc breaks leading to the loss of braking at the wheel and increasing stopping distance.

Ouch!!! I guess all manufacturers are going to have some issues. In this case this can be very dangerous. If they are recalling than this is a solid issue

A colleague of mine was just rear-ended by an X5 the other day, and it made me wonder about the rear disc-brake recall. What happened was he was driving and a car cut dangerously across him, he instantly reacted and saw the left lane open, and turned in to it...the X5 came up behind and didn't brake in time, rear-ending him. The insurance and police say he made 'an unsafe lane change' although he didn't get cited. The car which swerved in front, starting it all, got away. Also he found out that BMWs don't have event data recorders so they couldn't tell if the X5 was speeding. But if the X5 driver had been able to brake more firmly a crash might have been avoided.
