Why are car midcycle refreshes so ugly?

Oh CL got crashed, and it didn't update on what I said. Anyways, I always think face lifts look better and cleaner, and this Land Cruiser is a very big example.
I don't like the tail lights on the new Camry, but I'm sure it will grow on me once I see it in person. That what exactly happened when I saw the 09 IS350 tail lights.
Not always better, but it does most of the time.

MB E-class had a decent facelift in 2007. They did a great job on the front end, but the rear only got a longer chrome strip.
The 2009 Camry facelift was an exercise in pointlessness. I hope they made more improvements to the interior.
