Car and Driver has changed staff thoroughly in the last year or two, the magazine now reads very different than it used to IMHO. I personally want the old guys back, the new one is starting to remind me of Motor Trend and even worse, Automobile (where the new editor of C&D did some time...)

Weird that the two NEWEST cars are the two worst. This review pretty much goes against every other review I've read about the new E and the XF in terms of balance and handling prowess. Oh well.

Okay Im catching up on some reading and I'll post my observations very soon. What killed it for me was the Audi won the "Gotta have it" point total by 4 points. Seriously? No one mentions this car. It is not a "gotta have" car.

Amazingly the XF was LAST in this category.

Also the A6 was not fastest either. I thought that before reading the review based on this thread. The E-class is behind everyone.

Wow, didn't notice that, but have to agree 100%. I am a huge Audi fan, and I, nor anyone I know, has GOT TO HAVE an A6. The Jag or new E-Class I could believe. That could not be the furthest thing from the truth.

I want looking for a bargain 2009 A6 this weekend. There are only 4 2009 A6 3.0T prestige in the whole country left, and only 1 2009 A6 4.2L in the whole state of Massachusetts. These Audis are selling well, must have it, I am not sure about that.

Okay here are my observations;
The E was the cheapest at 55k with options. The Audi/Jag were next at 58k. Amazingly the Infiniti was 60k and the 535 was 63k.

So we have a dilemma here. You can still get a V-8 Japanese car for V-6 Euro money but who is paying 60k for an Infiniti? This goes back to my value eroding thread.

The Jag and Infiniti are the longest the 5/E the shortest. The Inifniit is the thinnest and 2 inches taller than everything (thus its odd look to me). The Jag was the widest 74 inches. The 535 is the lightest 3882 lbs . The Audi was the heaviest at nearly 4200 lbs. The Jag and Infiniti also were over 4000 lbs.

Audi and Benz have 21 gallon fuel tanks. Jag/BMW 18.5. All require premium gas.

Infiniti has the most room inside. Jag has the biggest trunk at 18 cubes, BMW 14 cubes.

Thats the biggest problem facing Japanese car makers right now, cost. They are approaching German prices, which means they are no longer a bargain. The Japanese are now sandwich between the Germans and the Korean and soon Chinese. They cant make their cars as cheap as the Koreans and if the price keeps going up on the Japanese cars, they will lose a lot of business to the Germans.

Infiniti has the most torque/HP but it is a V-8. 535 was the quickest a 5.2 run and 13.8 in the 1/4. No one was close. Jag/Benz over 6 seconds. Infiniti has the fastest rolling 5-60 time. Benz seems to be the quietest. Benz averaged 20 MPG in the test which was highest. Amazingly the newer V-6 S/C audi and the old M45 V-8 averaged the same 18 MPG.

BMW has 1 inch bigger brakes up front than anyone and even bigger gap in the rear. BMW had staggered wheels 245 front 275 rear. Benz was 245/ 265. No one had agressive rubber. M45 braked 2 feet shorter than the 5. BMW won the skidpad and lane change.

Only the M45 didn't have a 6/7 speed. Audi had the worst weight split, 57.7/42.3. Next was the M45. Best was the BMW 51/49.

Total scores are scary.
Audi-217
BMW-214
Infiniti-199
Jaguar-193
Benz-187

C&D gave the Benz the best interior/exterior styling
BMW got fun to drive by a point over the Audi
