I did the Inspection II on my E46 (not an M3 tho) and a lot of extra work not required by the procedure (changing all the "lifetime" fluids) for under $400. Kill half a day to save almost $2500? Totally worth it.

Inspection II for a standard E46 vs M3 is not exactly the same from my understanding. The M3 has solider lifter vs hydraulic of the stand E46s which require valve adjustments which is part of Inspection II for the M3. Also find a lot of reputable independent shops that do Inspection II for M3s for like $1,500.

Every inspection should come at/around 1332 gal of gas consumed. In normally driven E46 M3, the first inspection II should come right around 50k miles. Basically the maintenance schedule will run something like below; If you drive your car harder, inspections will come around faster or in less miles and conversely if you drive it like a prius cycle will come slower/more miles.
Initial 1200 mile service - 1200 miles
First oil change - 12k miles
Inspection I - 25k mile
Second oil change 36k miles
Inspection II - 50k miles
repeat the oil change, insp I, oil change, insp II cycle.
But if someone doesn't drive the car much, this sequence could get thrown off where someone might have two or more oil changes between inspections because the oil should be changed once a year at least. Also some people will change oil in their own more frequent interval - in my case, I will change at least twice in that 12-15k mile BMW oil change cycle sometimes more if I've driven at tracks/autox events. But regardless of oil change sequence, the inspection cycle should stay same so inspection I should come at 25kmile, 75kmiles etc and inspection II should come at 50k miles, 100k miles etc.

It doesn't follow a set mileage per se - the little computer on your dash will tell you when it's needed. It's really dependent upon how hard the car is driven, number of fill ups/fuel consumption from what I've seen/read. If you can find one that still has the maintenance package it will be covered under that. Those I know with an E46 (M3 and regular) had Inspection II between 40-50k miles and that seems pretty consistent with what I have found on the message boards.

Ah, so not a massive one time deal, good
The M3 in all likelyhood is rarely ever going to visit BMW, I have some guys that are great w. bimmers, so I'll go there (the IS goes there now so there's already a relationship)
Arg! I wish I had the space for both! & no I'm not selling one of the other cars instead.

very up in the air, I've got 2 finals nest week (10th & 12th, yes I'm doing a horrible job of studying right now, I know) so everything that isn't a catastrophy is on hold.
