Cost no object, we'd probably choose the BMW and its addictive diesel thrust. But if performance is less important than price or fuel efficiency—and $12,000 is a lot in this economy—the Lexus would be our pick.

However both offer nearly identical trunk capacity—12.1 cu-ft. for the Lexus and 12.0 cu.-ft. in the BMW.
Well done Lexus with the packaging of the battery in the HS.

However, with only a 1 MPG difference and with the HS being as slow as it is, it only stresses the fact that Lexus should have taken the time to put a better engine in it than the dated 2.4L.

Agreed. 2.5L would have been a nice addition for this car. A DI version of the engine would have gone even further, and adding Valvematic would have pushed it further yet. Lexus could have done a lot more with the motor than they did.

At the end of the day it seems like the HS returned respectable numbers, but as I have said all along, it's not so much about what the HS 250h is but what it could have been with just a few small tweaks under the hood.

...Additionally, it looks like an SUV/CUV in size compared to that 3er.

Yeah, but this is all highway driving. If they drove mostly city, it'd be more than 1 MPG difference.

Only 1 mpg seperates the battery pack 4 banger from a TT inline 6 diesel? I would expect more from the battery pack 4..

"Our fuel economy test took us from Santa Monica up through the mountains to Santa Barbara and on the 101 freeway to San Luis Obispo before returning home for a total of 390 miles. Over this route, the BMW returned 33.6 mpg and the Lexus delivered 34.7 mpg—just about 1 mpg better. If this test had been skewed more toward city driving, we expect the Lexus would have provided a more serious fuel economy advantage. "

It's highway driving. I can get 25mpg out my ISF on the highway.

He doesn't actually read what is posted so excuse him.

Its clear if you want more tech, a cheaper price, a less sporty ride and more city MPG, get the HS.
If you want a more sporty ride, don't mind the higher MSRP and do more highway than city driving, the 335 is for you.

I am VERY VERY happy to see both offered in America. Kudos to BMW and Lexus.

Has anyone seen the door panels in the HS? They are made out of old fabric detergent bottles.

I believe I saw you and your GS at Tarrytown. I followed an M3 with BMW logos all over to the BMW event, after I finished with Lexus event, there was a black GS there with big rims, and I think it was you in a greenish/bluish shirt getting in there?

335d's fuel economy is 23/36, HS250h's is 35/34. If the tester drove more in city, the separation would be significantly enlarged. Plus, with the higher diesel price and the $12k base price difference between the two, HS seems like a better buy to me. The $50k 335d still has no navigation system, ridiculous.

From customers' standpoint, more choice is always better. But I would like to see BMW bring over 320d rather than 335d so that BMW has at least one four cylinder model in its lineup here. It seems to me 335d are redunant with the existence of 335i.

Lets not forget that diesel fuel simply contains 20% more energy than petrol, take that for what its worth.
