My friend Jim ordered a '68 RoadRunner as a parts chaser for his family's heavy construction business back in the day. Most of his runs between Ft. Meyers and the Midwest were made overnight. The car, in the best traditions of the old moonshine runners had a 426 Hemi, a four-speed more at home in an 18-wheeler, a 2.70 rear end, a 36 gallon fuel bladder in the trunk, and brakes that existed nowhere in the MoPar catalog.
It was de-badged at the factory, except for two small "Hemi" badges in the (fake) hood scoops that were promptly removed. The car was delivered with no hubcaps, GIANT Goodyear Blue Streaks, painted Petty Blue and had the sorriest interior you've ever seen this side of a taxicab.
Somebody at the plant figured it was going to be a track car or a moonshiner, and did their best to produce one. It was a rocket off the line, even with that 2.70 rear end - a 4-speed being overkill for that torque monster of a hemi. It was actually faster than most hemi RoadRunners because as most owners eventually discovered with that suicide clutch, first gear was all wheelspin anyway, and started serious drags in second gear.
It worked pretty well as a fast cruiser - loafing along at about 2200 while covering gobs of interstate at triple-digit speeds. It was anything but comfortable with no P/S or A/C and an AM radio you couldn't hear over the exhaust anyway, but even at 140+ it drove as if it were on rails. It could put you in Memphis in just a tick over eight hours, even with a pit stop or two (the fuel bladder being a good bit larger than ours).
Jim never got a ticket in the three years he owned the beast - I don't think anything could catch him . . . or really wanted to try. Until he traded those Hemi logos for his little brother's "383" logos and slapping on some cheap hubcaps, he couldn't stop at a light without some kid pulling alongside and wanting to run him. After a few days, it just wasn't any fun anymore.

Entry level sleeper, but sleeper, none the less. It looks pretty much like the millions of other Cobalts that Chevy has sold, and the rice looking rear wing is only one of the things that distinguish it from the regular car. In either form, you would not give the car a second look if it pulled next to you at a light.
specs.
2 liter, 260 turbocharged 4cylinder @260 lb/ft torque
torque peaks at 2000 RPM, however makes useable power up to 6300 redline
forged alloy wheels with 4 piston Brembo's up front
0-60 - 5.6 seconds (second behind the Subaru WRX)
0-120 - 18.6 seconds (beat out WRX, Mazda 3, Lancer Ralliart)

Also comes in both 2 and 4 door versions. Yeah,, believe it is a sleeper. Entry level, no doubt, but sleeper still.

Just read in a car magazine that Acura is coming out with a TSX V6 for 2010. Hits 60 mph in under 6 seconds (faster than Maxima, ES350, and both TL siblings), and the only aesthetic differences between the I4 and V6 variations are split-spoke wheels and a V6 badge on the trunk.

i say a good sleeper is the 97-03 M5 (debadged of course).. in stock form this is already fast and dosent look any different (aside from exhaust and maybe rims) from any other 5 series of that time..

IS350 is a good sleeper. A lot of people still think it's a slow lexus but they don't know how effortless it can gain speed. I can burn E46 with an average driver easily in the IS350, and it is easier to drive faster than E92 M3.

Around here they are usually red and make a lot of noise, so not real low profile especially considering large footprint. Certainly a sleeper to the uninformed.

The new MB GL550 is sleeper worthy with its new TT 4.7L V8 that puts out 449hp 516lbs of tq.

0-60 in 5.1 seconds 1/4 mile in 13.6 @ 109. IMO, that's freakishly fast for a non AMG MB SUV.
