REPORT: Toyota planning 360HP successor to the Mark X
It appears that Toyota is currently planning a successor for the Mark X sedan also known as a Corona Mark II in the U.S. According to the latest reports from Japan’s Best Car Magazine, the new vehicle will evolve into a sporty sedan featuring only high quality materials in order to satisfy any type of customers. The new vehicle which will be offered in three trim levels (standard, premium and sport) will carry two new gasoline engines, a 2.5-liter and a more powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine capable to develop around 360 hp! More details to be revealed.

I am not that knowledgable about JDM matters, so perhaps someone else could shed some light on how the Mark compares to the Crown lineup.
3.5L and 360HP sounds too good to be true, but when they debuted Toyota said the DI versions of the GR engine family were capable of over 100hp/L in NA form. Who knows?

Pretty damned sure that as is, the 2GR could easily be capable of 330hp. With a few new tricks (valvematic/vvti-e/etc) I could see 350hp in it's future.
I am more curious though, as to what will become of the 4GR 2.5l engine.
p.s. If I am not mistaken, The Mark X is akin to the GS in size, but more sport oriented than the Aristo.

My hope is that the 3IS will see an updated version of the 3GR-FSE seen in the '06 GS 300, which produces 252hp. The 2.5L, while still a great engine, is obviously quickly falling behind the competition in terms of power.
I thought the Aristo had been discontinued when the GS arrived? One other thing I don't understand is how Toyota/Lexus positions their products in the JDM Market. In the Midsize Luxury market alone there are several versions of the Toyota Crown, the Toyota Mark X, and Lexus GS. I wonder how they position all of those rationally

The Crown has some serious Japanese heritage, being around for 40 years. Its not going anywhere and yes it does hurt the GS sales in Japan as the GS while being a Lexus has to battle its own brother.
Not sure about the Mark X. I remember when the IS 350 was to debut it was going to claim 320hp or so until the new EPA ratings came out. Surely with some updates more power is possible.
Good news for smaller V-6 fans too if we get a 252hp car and not a 204hp one.

Who knows what they have planned for the V8 line, but it looks like Toyota will have a V6 engine that pretty much overlaps its V8 offerings once again (if this is true). GS and LS would have to have 400+ hp. Crazy. IS-F with 460+ hp. LOL
To be honest I would be fine if they didnt change the engines at all, but reduced weight by no less than 100 lbs and added a manual transmission. I would be sooo content with that.

is the fact the LExus engines make comparable hp/acceleration with best in class or near best in class economy.

The Mark X is a bit smaller from I can see, there is a bit more leg room in a GS.

3.0 V6 = 275ps
3.5 V6 = 360ps
4.6 V8 = 430ps
5.0 V8 = 460ps
4.8 V10= 560ps
All with as good as/ better fuel economy than this generation. And at least 100lbs off every model.
What? A guy can dream can't he?

Not surprised, and this is very likely. Just with VVT-iE and Valvematic, the 3.5L 2GR-FSE engine can reach 360HP no problem. Not only that, but it will make the engine a lot more fuel efficient that the 2GR-FSE already is.
I hope this engine will be seen in the next-gen IS and GS. Also I hope these upgrades are done to other Lexus engines in the lineup to boost their competitiveness.
