Modding at 50
#32
Let's see, I'm 49 this year and I've done the inverse of all these things to my great detriment. But I haven't given up modding cars. I'm just very particular about how I do it because I've wasted a lot of money in my youth on mods that gained nothing measurable. I guess that's why I bought the IS-F instead of spending a lot of time and effort on trying to make my IS350 into something like the F. I'll let the factory take the lead, and then decide what I really need next based on what the stopwatch tells me...

Damn some of yall hate your moms? All Reggie is saying is his mom made a comment about his mods. She is probably old school and probably isn't into cars much like most moms, thus her disdain for it.
Regg, I think its cool you and others still mod at 50 plus, cause I know I will mod till I kick that bucket!!!

I don't care about what anyone thinks of my mom telling me what she thinks. SHe will be my mom as long as we both live and beyond. I treat her the same way, I tell her what I think is right or wrong. Then I do what I want. My mom is a penny pincher but she also has a spending hobby that I don't agree with but that's TMI.
That's not what I'm asking.
Will you always mod?

My dad is 66 and puts custom rims and exhaust on all his cars. Same with my mom. I'm 36 and doing a little work on my IS. Age has nothing to do with it. If you like cars, you like cars. As long as it's not taking away from eating, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, or getting you into debt, it's fine. Everyone has their hobbies.
What I do find is those single tend to do a bit more modding than those with a spouse, kids, a house, etc etc. No doubt there are exceptions to that however.
As far as your mom, that's good she's close to you. Better than no care at all.

When I was a kid, growing up, building Camaros and Mustangs was my thing. As I got away from domestics, and into imports, lowering, tints, wheels, sound, was what I was into. Now that I'm 46, I've slowed down. Those things aren't important to me anymore. Is there anything wrong with modding at 50? If you've got the discretionary income, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

I am 40 and just modded my LS 430. I will continue to mod until I die, but as I age and mature my mods have become more subtle. If Lexus were to give more factory options, my modding would be slim to none (tint and a slight drop). Most European cars come from the factory the way I would want them or at least with the option to add things I would want. I would love a 7 series with the 20 or 21 inch wheel option or an Audi A8 with the 20 inch wheel option. I am a Lexus man however, and with that come the realization that Lexus has been a more conservative brand in need of my personal aftermarket touch to get things "just right" and to my tastes. As far as the issue with your mother, I have a great deal of respect for those that respect their parents. Our society would be a much better place if more people were like this. I still respect, love, and fear my parents to this day. It has nothing to do with being a baby, momma's boy, or anything else. I stand on my own and recognize the validity in the points they make with me periodically and use them as I navigate through life. I have done quite well in life and will expect the same from my children. Ha-ha, by the way.... my father LOVED the looks of my car, while my mother and wife were not so enthused. Maybe it is a guy thing, but while I listened to opinion from family, I still did MY thing. At the end of the day it is about making sure your financial house is in order, you are tasteful, and somwhat age appropriate. I would only do so much with my car based on my occupation and some other factors, but the car looks good to me, shows my personal taste, and love for cars!

A lot of good points here.
I like the idea of trading in the GS for an ISF and forgetting the toy.
Problem is my next car has to be a coupe. I made the mistake of getting a sedan and won't do that again. Only coupe I can see myself in is the G37. That is a strong possibility. I liked the G35 I had except for the small seat. That has been improved in the G37 and it's on my radar.
I do like the GS though and it would be nice to keep it and add a Mustang or Camaro to mod out.
BTW, my Mom had a 280Z when I was growing up. That car helped fuel my interest in cars. She's considering a 370Z now that she's retired. I am trying to talk her out of it. The car is too fast at her age. Did I say that?!
I'll let Mom do what she wants...it's her money!

When i bought my GS the first thing my mom said was "your not going to do it all up like your other car are you?" needless to say i didnt have plans to do anything besides wheels. I then joined CL and it all went down hill. FML
