Default Toyota Said to Achieve 10-Fold Lithium-ion Battery Breakthrough

Now that's real breakthrough!

http://www.allcarselectric.com/blog/...y-breakthrough

Toyota may be slow to actually adopt lithium-ion batteries into its cars, but it appears the company may be ahead of the pack when it come to basic scientific development.
A report out of the Nikkei in Japan states that Toyota achieved the ability to fabricate single crystals of cobalt-oxide for use in lithium ion cells.

A lithium-ion battery stores energy by moving charged lithium ions through a matrix consisting of a carbon graphite anode and various different molecular cathodes. In Toyota's case cobalt oxide is the cathode, but in present technology exists as a large crystalline molecular structure.

In the breakthrough, by creating single crystals, much less graphite is needed thereby making room for more energy storing lithium.

Over the next 10 years Toyota engineers hope to completely eliminate the carbon altogether therefore effectively creating a battery that can hold 10 times the energy in the same mass.

Thus if a battery using today's technology could hold about 60 miles of EV range in a 400 pound pack, when this technique comes of age, 600 miles of range could be stored in the same size battery.

Very interesting development. My understanding is that as the hybrid leader, Toyota has been holding off on lithium-ion for a number of reasons, but mainly because they want to develop the tech to a certain level before applying it mass market. A 10X increase in energy output would do just that!

That is a significant breakthrough. A laptop would last for months.

Some of it is TOyota has bought companies and invested so much in the batteries they use now they are not going to be quick to abandon them.

Great job by Toyota. Good to see they did not rush li-ion batteries to market, and they are continuing to be one of the worldwide leaders in battery technology.

Never cease to amaze me. Detroit version of innovation is bending truths ex. the volts 250mpg rating.

I still don't understand why no one is using NanoSafe batteries for any hybrid or electric car. It's not like this is that new. It was first introduced in 2007. The only car with this battery technology is the Lightning GT.

Imagine being able to charge a car in 10 minutes with the proper power supply, and having the batteries last so much longer.

also, it looks like, from reading this, the altairnano is doing what toyota says, taking out the carbon...

all we need are economical, deep charge, small, lightweight battery for EVs to become viable. We have everything else already.

I followed these guys for a bit because of the thermal runaway characteristics of their chemistry (you won't see laptops burning if they had these batteries). They have(had?) an issue with specific energy (think energy per unit of weight), cost (surprise?!), and varying voltage as the charge level decreases.

Very cool technology though and it would be nice to see them get a major win after all the time they have been working on this.

I have no idea what that article is talking about with the oxide carbon mumbo jumbo, but im sure its a real breakthrough.

Tomoco needs to stay as the hybrid leader and they need something like this to put others in their place
