Yes, the IS-F does have some good torque....sorry if my earlier post suggested otherwise. What I meant was that even with the over 300 ft-lbs., it does not approach the 416 HP rating. Same with the BMW M3.....its 414 HP rating is well ahead of the 295 ft-lbs. of torque. And it shows on the tach......like a classic Honda VTEC 4, you have to spin the daylights out of the engine to get HP peak...up around 8000.

I think we both agree that CVT has potential for more future applications.
The traditional problem with CVTs in high-powered engines is developing a chain/belt that will take a lot of power and keep from breaking. Nissan seems to have got one that runs up to about 300 HP or so and torque in the high 200's. Subaru (supposedly) uses the same one as Nissan, but currently restricts it to the non-turbo 2.5 (170 HP, 170 ft-lbs.).....I guess they want to walk with it before they try to run.

Exactly, CVT is not good enough and durable enough for me. Agreed need to walk before running.

My favorite full automatics are still the 6/7/8 speed trannys from Lexus and Mercedes. They are both durable and high performance with silky smooth nearly imperceptible shifts even when driven hard.

I am ULTRA curious to see will the new model sell better than the old one.

I'm all for the extra mileage, but downshifting through 8 speeds to get to 1 must be a chore on the road. I guess you get used to it or don't downshift.

In most cases, you usually don't need more than 5 or 6....especially for most daily driving. If you're going to have more than that, you might as well use a CVT, with a infinite number of ratios.
:

You got a good point here that you won't likely need more than 6 speeds but the LS, S class, A8 and 7 series are built high speed long distance cruising on the autobhan highways...in America it may not be needed but there are some places that have use for it.
