Edmunds.com Forecasts August Auto Sales: Predicts Year’s Highest SAAR, Notes Unprecedented Sales Volatility
SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This month's new vehicle sales (including fleet sales) are expected to be around 1.17 million units, nearly a six percent decrease from August 2008 but up nearly 18 percent from July 2009, according to Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information.
Edmunds.com analysts predict that August’s Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Rate (SAAR) could be just over 13 million, this year’s highest by far. However, a week-by-week analysis reveals that this summer has been the industry’s most volatile period in history, due to the government’s Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), also known as Cash for Clunkers.
“Cash for Clunkers sent the sales rate on a wild roller coaster ride,” said Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell. “The SAAR surpassed 19 million in late July, bounced around in the 15 million range early in August and has fallen to around eight million currently. Ending August on such a low note does not bode well for September.”
Edmunds.com analysts note that the unusual inventory shortage faced by many dealerships could mean that deals are stuck in the pipeline and, when accounted for, will move the numbers significantly.
“Hyundai and Ford were the biggest winners in the Cash for Clunkers contest, experiencing significant growth in August sales compared with a year ago,” said Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs, whose analysis of Edmunds.com’s August sales forecast can be found on AutoObserver.com. “This is likely to be a record month for Hyundai, beating their prior sales record by a mile – maybe as much as 40 percent.”
“In contrast, some automakers couldn’t really make Cash for Clunkers work for them, and their August sales suffered as a result,” Krebs noted, “Chrysler and GM – both hurt by extended factory shutdowns during their Chapter 11 proceedings – had limited inventory to feed Cash for Clunkers, while high-end automakers didn’t have the right products for these buyers.”
The combined monthly U.S. market share for Chrysler, Ford and GM domestic nameplates is estimated to be 42.2 percent in August 2009, down from 45.7 percent in August 2008 and down from 44.2 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts Chrysler will sell 86,000 units in August 2009, down 22 percent compared to August 2008 and down 3 percent from July 2009. This would result in a new car market share of 7.4 percent for Chrysler in August 2009, down from 8.8 percent in August 2008 and down from 8.9 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts Ford will sell 185,000 units in August 2009, up 22 percent compared to August 2008 and up 13 percent from July 2009. This would result in a new car market share of 15.9 percent of new car sales in August 2009 for Ford, up from 12.2 percent in August 2008 but down from 16.4 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts GM will sell 222,000 units in August 2009, down 28 percent compared to August 2008 but up 18 percent from July 2009. GM's market share is expected to be 19.0 percent of new vehicle sales in August 2009, down from 24.7 percent in August 2008 and down from 18.9 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts Honda will sell 137,000 units in August 2009, down 7 percent from August 2008 but up 19 percent from July 2009. Honda’s market share is expected to be 11.8 percent in August 2009, flat compared to 11.8 percent in August 2008 and up from 11.5 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts Hyundai will sell 108,000 units in August 2009, up 63 percent from August 2008 and up 44 percent from July 2009. Hyundai’s market share is expected to be 9.3 percent in August 2009, up from 5.3 percent in August 2008 and up from 7.5 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts Nissan will sell 89,000 units in August 2009, down 18 percent from August 2008 but up 25 percent from July 2009. Nissan's market share is expected to be 7.7 percent in August 2009, down from 8.7 percent in August 2008 and up from 7.2 percent in July 2009.
Edmunds.com predicts Toyota will sell 209,000 units in August 2009, down 1 percent from August 2008 and up 20 percent from July 2009. Toyota's market share is expected to be 18.0 percent in August 2009, up from 17.0 percent in August 2008 and up from 17.6 percent in July 2009.

Volkswagen of America Reports August Sales
Best Sales Month Since December 2005
HERNDON, Va., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported August 2009 sales of 24,823 units representing an increase of 11.4 percent over August 2008.
The government sponsored Car Allowance Rebate System, otherwise known as Cash for Clunkers, helped Volkswagen post its best sales month since December 2005. With a full model range of fuel efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles Volkswagen was well positioned for the program. Volkswagen of America's volume model, the Jetta, also posted its best sales month since December 2005 with 12,872 total units. Volkswagen's versatile compact Sport Utility Vehicle, the Tiguan, posted strong August sales results with 1,750 units. CC and Routan also posted extremely strong August results with sales of 1,980 and 2,098 units respectively.
"We are extremely pleased with our August sales results. The government sponsored Cash for Clunkers program was instrumental at sparking the entire auto industry. The fact that Volkswagen currently has more vehicles that attain 25 miles per gallon or better on the highway than any other brand well positioned us to capitalize on the program," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Volkswagen's success in the program is best illustrated by how well our extremely fuel efficient TDI models sold during the program, resulting in virtual sold out situation of our model year 2009 TDI inventory. However, 2010 model year Jetta sedan TDI's are now available in dealer showrooms and Jetta SportWagen TDI's will be available later this month," added Barnes.

Disclaimer- Some cars blend categories. You might not agree 100% where some are placed. This is informational only, you can decipher it as you please. This is not the golden list. Zeus didn't approve it. Its something I enjoy and like to share with members. Don't cry and run to mommy if you don't like where something is placed. Some cars and categories blend lines with me, I put them where I think they fit best. Yes I may add some cars together for informational purposes. If seeing some Lexus figures bunched together angers you that much you may need to visit a strip club and ask for the "Special" since you are that angry. Thanks
Also before making assumptions, be aware different vehicles have different sales goals and many times its not apples to apples. For instance its easy to say A car is outselling B car but B car might have much lower targets. Be aware of the sales goals.

Ford's Strong Lineup Drives Retail Sales Up 21 Percent
DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Ford, Lincoln and Mercury retail sales increased 21 percent versus a year ago; total sales (including fleet) were 176,323, up 17 percent versus a year ago
Ford's August sales increase follows July increase, making Ford one of the only manufacturers to post back-to-back sales increases
Record sales in August for Ford's Focus, Fusion, Escape, Edge and Flex and Mercury Mariner; Mercury Milan sales up 112%
In a sign of economic recovery, Ford posted the best Ranger (up 57 percent) and F-Series (up 13 percent) sales in more than a year; Transit Connect sales 70 percent higher than plan
All-new Taurus and fuel-saving EcoBoost engines gain momentum in August
Ford (NYSE: F), Lincoln and Mercury dealers reported a 21 percent increase in retail sales in August as customer demand for Ford's fuel-efficient cars, crossovers and trucks enabled the company to post its second consecutive increase in monthly sales. Total sales - including fleet customer deliveries - were 176,323, up 17 percent versus last year.
"We have the freshest lineup of new products in the industry," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. "Ford's leadership in quality, fuel-efficiency, safety and technology all are resonating with consumers, and it is being reflected in our sales results."
Ford now has gained retail market share in 10 of the last 11 months. Plus, internal and external studies continue to show a positive trend in favorable consumer opinion about Ford, and a growing number of consumers are shifting consideration to Ford vehicles.
August Sales Highlights
Ford Focus sales totaled 25,547, an August record and up 56 percent versus a year ago. The Focus is among the most fuel-efficient compact cars in America with an EPA highway rating of 35 mpg.
Ford Fusion sales totaled 21,010, a sales record for any month and up 132 percent versus a year ago. Mercury Milan sales were 3,844, up 112 percent. The Fusion and Milan and their hybrid versions are the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans in America.
Ford Escape sales totaled 20,933, a sales record for August, and up 49 percent versus a year ago. Mercury Mariner sales were 3,921 (also a record for August), up 50 percent. The Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid are the most fuel-efficient utility vehicles in America.
Ford Edge sales totaled 10,845, an August sales record and up 9 percent versus a year ago.
Ford Flex sales totaled 4,151, an August sales record and up 107 percent versus a year ago. The Flex is among the most fuel-efficient full-size crossover utilities in America.
Total Ford, Lincoln and Mercury crossover utility vehicle sales were 42,241, an August sales record and up 28 percent versus a year ago.
Ford's hybrid vehicles - Fusion, Milan, Escape and Mariner - posted combined sales of 4,695, an August sales record and up 251 percent versus a year ago. At 41 miles per gallon, the Fusion Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan in America - 8 mpg better than the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Signs of Economic Recovery
Early signs of economic recovery are suggested by this month's sales results for Ford's pickup trucks and the all-new Transit Connect van. Sales of the Ford F-Series - America's best-selling truck - were 45,590, up 13 percent. Sales of the Ford Ranger - the most-fuel-efficient pickup in America - were 7,746, up 57 percent. Sales for each truck were the highest in more than a year, and it was the first sales increase for F-Series since October 2006.
The Transit Connect, a small, fuel-efficient purpose-built van, is the first ONE FORD global vehicle to be sold in the United States. August sales for the Transit Connect were 2,220 versus 417 in July, and sales were 70 percent higher than the company's goal for the month.
"We're very pleased with the balanced performance of our products - from Focus to F-Series," said Czubay. "We are hopeful that the sales of our pickups and all-new Transit Connect are an indication that small business owners are seeing signs of recovery and gaining confidence in the outlook for stronger business conditions."
Ford Taurus and EcoBoost Gain Momentum
Sales of the all-new 2010 Ford Taurus sedan totaled 2,355 versus 309 in July. With limited availability as production continues to ramp up, Taurus retail sales nearly matched year-ago levels and more than double the company's goal for the month. Favorable third-party reviews are putting Taurus on the shopping list of even long-time foreign car owners, who cite the Taurus' design, technology and interior luxury and comfort as reasons for purchase.
Also gaining momentum is Ford's new EcoBoost engine - with dealer orders for EcoBoost-equipped models exceeding company expectations. EcoBoost uses gasoline turbocharged direct-injection technology for up to 20 percent better fuel economy, 15 percent fewer CO2 emissions and superior driving performance versus larger displacement engines. It is now on sale in the Ford Taurus SHO and Flex and Lincoln MKS, and soon on the MKT crossover vehicle. In these vehicles, EcoBoost provides the fuel economy of a six-cylinder and the performance of a V-8.
"Customers tell us they love our new products, and their favorable opinion of the Ford brand is continuing to gain strength," said Czubay. "All of us at Ford remain absolutely committed to building on this progress and delivering even more products that customers truly want and value."
Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their sales to retail and fleet customers.

OAKVILLE, Ontario, September 1, 2009 – Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited increased sales by 7.1 per cent compared to last August marking the third consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. August also marked the tenth consecutive month of market share growth for the company.
"Our goal is to remain focused on our customers and on delivering class-leading products for the months and years ahead," said David Mondragon, president and CEO, Ford of Canada. "By delivering the freshest line of new products in the industry, we'll keep customers coming back to our showrooms."
To build sustainable sales success, Ford is introducing seven new vehicles this year and a product lineup that will be 100 per cent new or refreshed by the end of 2010.
Early consumer reaction to the all-new 2010 Ford Taurus has been very positive and the unique Transit Connect compact van is off to a great start. Also this summer, Ford debuts its EcoBoost engine which provides the fuel economy of a six-cylinder engine and the performance of a V-8. EcoBoost is available on the Taurus SHO, Lincoln MKS as well as the Canadian-built Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT.
Overall car sales were up 17 per cent in August driven by Ford Focus, Ford Fusion, Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKZ. Ford F-150, Flex, Escape and Ranger all saw sales increases of 18.3 per cent, 8.2 per cent, 2.8 per cent and 15.8 per cent respectively.
"We see clear signs that the Canadian economy is rebounding and that the auto industry is also on the road to recovery," said Mondragon. "And to keep our sales momentum going, we're extending our Drive One Challenge and Ford Employee Pricing through until September 8th, 2009 so customers can have more time to take advantage of these great deals."

Hyundai
Hyundai Motor America Reports All-Time Record Sales for August 2009
- All-time sales record for the award-winning Genesis
- All-time sales record for the award-winning Elantra
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced August sales of 60,467 units, a 47 percent increase compared with August 2008 and a 33 percent increase over last month, marking an all-time monthly sales record. This also marks the eighth consecutive month of year-over-year retail share gains for Hyundai.
"August was a shot-in-the-arm for the industry, and a great month for Hyundai and our dealers, with all-time sales records for the Hyundai brand, Elantra and Genesis," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. "U.S. car buyers responded in record numbers to high-quality, award-winning Hyundai products and our industry-leading Hyundai Assurance programs - the 10-year warranty, vehicle return program, and Gas Lock price protection. Elantra was well-positioned to take advantage of the CARS program with its fuel-efficiency and J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey award, while Genesis, the North American Car of the Year and the most-awarded new car of 2009 with over 20 awards, continues to attract smart consumers looking for outstanding value and quality in premium market segments."
These awards and this sales performance are examples of how Hyundai's quality and brand awareness continue to set new standards, thanks to a corporate-wide determination and focus on quality improvement.
"The successful Cash for Clunkers program stimulated the auto industry in time for the summer selling season, and we will work to continue that momentum through the fall," said Dave Zuchowski, vice president of sales. "Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama has returned to a five-day work week, our inventories are replenished and our dealers' lots are filled with a broad lineup of high-value, fuel-efficient vehicles."
