Cool So, I bought a new motorcycle...

Well, technically, it's not new.

I got it used with only 5 miles. The previous owner bought it, displayed it for a party, then rode it, and ultimately didn't like it (crazy rich people... ).

So, I traded in my '04 Ducati Multistrada 1000 for an '09 Ducati Monster 1100. Same company, but two completely different bikes. I was actually eyeing a Streetfighter for some time, but after a test ride, the bike was too powerful for my taste. With the Monster, I can push it to its limits without being so audacious. She's very light (373 lbs dry), agile, responsive, confident, and easy to maintain. Not the most powerful bike out there (she's only 100 hp), but it's very plenty for canyon twisties (I don't do track days...)

I love naked bikes more than full fairing racing ones. I lost a bit of functionality: the 'Strada was made for touring with lots of luggage capacity and perfect ergonomics. The Monster makes up for it with spunk and reflex, and not to mention a bit more power and technology. I would have gone overboard with anything more race-worthy.

I guess I need to name her now...

If the Streetfighter was too powerful for you, did you try out of these before you got the 1100?

(Just kidding. Congragulations, and enjoy your new bike )

If it doesn't have at least a couple of miles on it by the time it's delivered, it probably wasn't adequately tested, either at the factory or the dealership. And, of course, you want to test-drive it before delivery yourself, to make sure you're not getting a lemon....that adds at least a couple more miles. In this case, of course, the previous owner apparantly test-drove it for you.

Did you get a good price from depreciation?............the fact that someone else had owned it, even briefly, may (?) have dropped its value down some, or did the dealership still consider it brand-new, with only 5 miles?

Sweet! I've always loved the Monsters. Ducati has really made it a lot more updated looking since the mid-90's models. Only 100HP?! That's plety of power on tap and can get you into some serious trouble.

Congrats on the new ride. The single sided swing arm is b!!tchin'!

Yep. 100 HP on a bike that size will definitely get it out of its own way.

Yes, I did.

Brand new, with no negotiations and adding all fees (destination, freight, dealer prep, license, etc), it would come to about $16k OTD.

I was able to get it for about $4k less than that...

To be fair, new motorcycles NEVER have any miles on them when they arrive at the dealer. They're packed in a crate and drop shipped, then assembled at the dealer. When I bought my Honda CBR 929RR, they put it together as I was driving over to the dealer and I was literally the first person to push the start button.

And I've yet to see a single dealer that allows test rides without a deposit amounting to 100% of the purchase price. Simply too many dummies in the world and too many things that can go wrong, therefore the insurance to allow test rides is beyond prohibitively expensive. So most new bikes are delivered with 2 miles or less on the clock, and the new owner rides it for the first time AFTER signing the paperwork.
