Rescuers say it's a miracle the driver of a car that was crushed between two trucks on Highway 20 survived the dramatic accident.

According to Gilles Ducharme, chief of operations for the Montreal Fire Department, the 29-year-old man appears to only have suffered minor injuries.

"When the man left for hospital, the only thing visible was a cut on his skull, and he doesn't have any fractures. And if it's only that, it's only a miracle," Ducharme said.

The man was transported to hospital to be examined, after being trapped inside his Mazda 3 for about 90 minutes.

The two truck drivers were also taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Six-vehicle collision

The accident happened just before 11:30 a.m. on the eastbound side of Highway 20, between the Angrignon exit and the Turcot Interchange.

The driver of the Mazda 3 was crushed under an 18-wheeler after he was hit from behind by a second tractor-trailer. Police suspect a pickup truck triggered a chain reaction that forced four truckers to slam their brakes, trapping the small car in the middle.

Observing the scene of the accident, tow truck operator Brian Amadour said it's hard to believe the driver of the car escaped without any serious injuries.

"Take a look at this car. It's impressive, it's amazing," he said.

Traffic chaos

The accident forced the closure of one lane on the eastbound side of the highway, causing bumper-to-bumper traffic for several kilometres.

There was also some traffic on the westbound side of the highway early in the afternoon, as curious motorists slowed down to look at the aftermath of the crash.
