This is about the all-weather floor mats and not the carpeted ones..

here's the story on the crash:

It would be nice to see more details.

I'm guessing they want the dealer service department to look at the mats and make the determination as to which mats should be destroyed and replaced. Just a guess, but if that's the case not all mats will be replaced.

I doubt this but it would be nice. My g/f's POS OEM all weather mats got a hole the first year she had them in. We first figured it was from her driving with heels all the time but that's clearly not the case as many members have had this issue.

Another thing is I don't really understand that issue with the floor mats slipping under the accelerator pedal. Is it from not using the hook where the hole is? I currently have the all weather mats hooked in and on top of the carpet ones, which I guess you're not supposed to do (?), and I was pulling at it the other day and I don't see how or why this would happen...

Both the Lexus-brand carpeted and all-weather mats attach to the hook under the driver's seat. How could they possibly move forward?

Go to any car wash and watch how often they put the mats back in the car with the hooks engaged. I'd bet a whole lot of these incidents have happened after someone got the car washed with an interior clean and the mats were just tossed back in the car, not properly restrained with the hook(s) provided by Scion/Toyota/Lexus.

Go to any car wash where they remove the mats and vacuum. Note they only rarely engage the hooks when they put the mats back in the car. I've seen it in California and I've seen it here in Georgia. It's RARE for the mats to be properly installed after going to a car wash.

I'd bet the majority of the incidents we've heard about are after the car has been to a car wash and the mats were not properly installed after being removed for cleaning and interior vacuuming.

'Urgent' recall of 3.8M Toyotas; accelerator may stick

Toyota is recalling 3.8 million Toyotas and Lexuses because floor mats could make the accelerator stick, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced.

USA TODAY auto writer Chris Woodyard has the details. The NHTSA "strongly recommends taking out removable floor mats on the driver’s side in certain models and not to replace them with any other mat, either from Toyota or any other brand."

Read the news release.

"This is an urgent matter," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "For everyone’s sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration."

The affected models are:

2007-2010 Camry

2005-2010 Avalon

2004-2009 Prius

2005-2010 Tacoma

2007-2010 Tundra

2007-2010 ES 350

2006-2010 IS 250 and IS 350

It's the company's largest U.S. recall.

The Detroit Free Press has more.

"all-weather floor mats in the vehicle were not the proper size for the vehicle and may have slid forward and pinned the vehicle’s accelerator to the floor, causing it to speed out of control."

that is one heavy mat. i have the all weather floor mats on my IS and they fit perfectly underneath the pedals

Floor mats are cheap (at cost, not retail). Not yet sure every car is impacted.

Finally answering the buring question: What happens if you press the ignition on/off button while the car is in motion?

-If the vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.

I just called my dealer and they said it was for ES350 models, and with rubber mats. It should NOT affect IS models.
