Toyota Begins Interim Notification to Owners Regarding Future Voluntary Safety Recall
#95
I am removing the seats as we speak, can't be too careful, especially when you don't have 30 secs to inspect your driving station. I am thinking of taking out all the carpet too...
A sad crash for sure, but no one really knows what the cause was yet, just a whole heap of fingers being pointed.

I guess the problem happens when the gas pedal is floored. It must have something to do with the length of the accelarator and the angle of the floor when the gas pedal is depressed all the way. This should serve as a warning to all those owner who like to stack floor mats for what ever reason.

I saw this quote in the NY Times about that incident:
This month, Toyota ordered dealers to inspect the floor mats in all Toyota and Lexus vehicles after a crash on Aug. 28 near San Diego killed four people; the police said the accident might have been caused by an improperly installed mat. The car was a 2009 Lexus ES 350 on loan from a dealership to the driver, an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer.

This appears to be a dealer and/or operator error vs. the manufacturer. If the mat is properly installed, as designed, this won't happen.

I agree that I don't see how it's cost cutting, but if it was pure driver error, and not the fault of the design, there wouldn't be a recall of 3.8 MILLION cars. Remember how hard Audi fought the unintended acceleration claims in the late 80s? And they were right--it was all driver error. Toyota wouldn't just roll over like that if it was all driver error.

there's another way to look at a recall - ADVERTISING. it gets all these car owners to 're-connect' with their dealers, it can re-enforce that toyota/lexus is looking out for them, it may well get dealers some new business (service, accessories or vehicles)...

Checked this morning...the accelerator pedal (sport package metal version) doesn't come anywhere near the carpet mat as long as the mat is attached to the hooks near the seat. Haven't checked the winter mats yet...
Not too worried. My wife drives the IS most of the time and she drives like a granny (well, she actually is a granny) and I doubt if she's ever had the pedal to the floor (but I have ;-)
