BMW Group U.S. Division Reports September 2009 Sales

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time this year, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported an increase in sales compared to the same month last year. In September, sales increased by 3.6 percent to 19,175 units compared to 18,506 vehicles sold in September 2008. The BMW Group also reported a year-to-date sales volume of 179,219 vehicles, down 24.2 percent, compared to 236,327 vehicles sold in the first nine months of last year.

BMW Brand Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 2.1 percent in September for a total of 15,047 vehicles compared to 14,744 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago driven by strong passenger car sales. BMW's sports activity vehicles saw a decline compared to last year in part due to limited inventory of the X5 after the better than expected Advanced Diesel X5 model sales volume. Year-to-date, BMW brand sales were down 26.3 percent to 144,223 vehicles compared to 195,633 vehicles sold in the same period of 2008.

"For now, we'll take this first small bit of good news but the premium segment is not out of the woods yet as consumers keep on reacting cautiously to the mixed signals in the economy," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. "For BMW, we expect the bumpy road to continue into next quarter in advance of 2010, when we see consumer confidence improving and a major launch of new BMW products start to hit the market."

BMW Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)

In September, dealers continued to see good interest in pre-owned vehicles. Sales of BMW's Certified Pre-Owned vehicles increased 4.2 percent, to 8,033 CPO vehicles versus 7,707 vehicles reported in September a year ago. Year-to-date, CPO sales were up 9.6 percent, to 84,515 over the 77,144 reported in the same period of 2008.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI USA reported sales of 4,128 automobiles an increase of 9.7% compared to 3,762 cars reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 34,996 automobiles, a decrease of 14 percent, compared to the 40,694 cars reported in the first nine months of 2008.

"September was another unique 'out of wack' month as many dealers reported fewer shoppers and tire-kickers after the end of the 'Cash for Clunkers' program," said Jim McDowell, Vice President MINI USA. "MINI has been fortunate to counter this climate with higher sales compared to last September and serious buyers helping the brand to continuously increase its market share."

Kia Motors America Announces Best Quarter Ever

September Sales Up Year to Date

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced its best quarter of sales ever with a September monthly total of 21,623 units sold, a 24.4-percent increase from September 2008. Year to date sales totaled 238,570, a 4.6-percent increase over the same period last year. September sales were led by the Kia Optima midsize sedan and all-new Forte compact sedan, selling 5,986 and 4,449 units respectively. The all-new Soul urban passenger vehicle and Rio subcompact also sold well, with 2,459 and 2,811 units.

"Consumer confidence in the Kia brand is on the rise, and on the heels of an all-time record sales month in August we continue our momentum by achieving the best sales quarter in company history," said Alex Fedorak, director of public relations, KMA. "New designs, like the highly styled and personalized Soul, Forte compact sedan and Forte Koup, are appealing to a larger consumer audience while staying true to our brand's core pillars of value, safety and fuel efficiency."

Kia Motors is in the midst of a dramatic, design-led transformation, which has been delivering dynamically styled vehicles in several important segments at exactly the right time contributing to the brand's continued gains in U.S. market share. The upcoming launch of the all-new 2011 Sorento CUV, the first vehicle to be built at the company's first U.S.-based manufacturing facilities in West Point, Georgia, will further enhance the lineup.

The +7.3% figure comes from Toyota's calculation based on daily selling rate. Based on pure monthly sales volume instead like MB and BMW's figures are, Lexus's percentage change for the month is actually +11.8%.

Wow, that is BIG drop for Genesis sales from August. Surely that is worrysome, since it includes both coupe and sedan sales. To compare, the Maxima absolutely CRUSHED the Genesis in sales. Even the old, dated Avalon outsold the Genesis! Looks like the Lexus HS was also close to outselling the Genesis as well, and that model is supply-limited right now. The RX hybrid almost outsold the Genesis as well.

Some really interesting sales statistics here. E-Class sales are a bit worrysome, but they are still not bad. S Class sales are holding solid, and so are C-Class sales. Benz outsold BMW, so I don't think they are that worried. Toyota Land Cruiser sales were UP , IS sales were UP, and RX sales, simply astonishing! Ford Explorer and F-Series sales were solid this month. SC sales don't look good at all, I hope the next-gen model debuts soon.

The RX outsold the ENTIRE Infiniti brand by quite a margin, as well as the ENTIRE Acura brand! Sales smash hit doesn't even begin to describe the new RX. Both Infiniti and Acura sales were down quite a bit, yet Lexus sales were up. Comparing the RX to other competition in it's class is not even worth it anymore. Now we are comparing RX sales to ENTIRE near-luxury/luxury brands .

Lexus was the top luxury brand in sales again. Looks like it will keep the crown this year, I doubt BMW will beat it in the 4th quarter.

I have to agree, Chrysler's PR guys are horrible. Some pretty bad spin going on over there. Sebring and Commander sales for the year fell off a cliff. Caliber sales are way down, good riddance as it's a really mediocre product.

Honda Insight sales are in the toilet. The Lexus HS almost outsold the Insight. Comparing Insight sales to the Prius is just laughable now. Also, OUCH to TL sales, down to 2K a month now. TSX sales are actually holding decently, as the TSX is the least offensive model in their lineup right now, styling-wise.

It is a complete slap in the face (beak) to Acura that their only car left without the beak, the MDX, was their best selling model. Hey morons that is a CLEAR SIGN your new styling direction is a joke.

The new TL is selling horribly, they barely sold 2k units last month it will be one years old next month and sales will only continue to drop. The TSX outsold it barely but that car isn't selling well either. The RDX never sold well, neither the RL.

To think those idiots think the ZDX is a savior. Looking at X6 sales they never were strong (800 or so their best month) and have plummeted to under 300 a month. Yet Acura says ZDX sales will rise form 6k to 8k to 10k over the years.

I don't ever recall the RX outselling Acura by itself. They do it to Infiniti all the time but I've NEVER seen the RX outsell the entire Acura brand.

Very interesting, thx for pointing that out! Lexus VP Mark Templin forecast that Lexus sales in 2009 would be like the Nike "Swoosh" symbol, and the incremental sales increases as the year enters fall bears that out.

Interesting comparison from Templin. RX sales should continue to be monstrous, HS sales will rise as Toyota increases production, and the ES and IS seem to be doing decently well. LS sales seem to be stabilizing. Although it won't affect sales this year, the new GX is supposed to go on sale in December.

That is a HUGE slap in the face to Acura. I have never seen this happen myself either.
