Default Top 10 auto companies in global sales

We often talk about sales numbers here Club Lexus and automatically assume we are talking about US sales numbers only, I just want to post this link which reflects the over all global sales of the top 10 car companies. A couple of surprise here on the list are:

Hyundai has climb to # 5 in global sales.

Audi overtook BMW and Mercedes-Benz as Europe and China's leading luxury car brand.

VW is quite a ways behind GM and Toyota. I thought the gap was more narrow than that.

That is correct that the figures are for the 2008 year. One has to remember that those figures are number of units sold and not translated into dollars sold.

Per the 2008 Fortune Global 500 in sales in dollars Hyundai is 11th.

1. Toyota Motor - $204,352,300,000
2. Volkswagen - $166,579,100,000
3. General Motors - $148,979,000,000
4. Ford Motor - $146,277,000,000
5. Diamler - $140,327,900,000
6. Honda Motor - $99,652,400,000
7. Fiat - $86,913,600,000
8. Nissan Motor - $83,982,000,000
9. Peugeot - $79,560,100,000
10. BMW - $77,863,700,000
11. Hyundai Motor - $72,541,800,000
12. Renault - $55,314,100,000

It will be very interesting to see what the 2009 figures will look like. Most likely GM will drop further down. Toyota should still be number 1 and I'm sure Hyundai will move up.

Correct.....total units, of course, differs from the next question (total dollars sold), below:

How are these "dollar" figures obtained? Is this simply the total value of the list prices of all the sold vehicles added up, the total company profits on all the vehicle sold (after expenses), or simply the total company profits in general, after taxes? There are, of course, many ways this data can be intrepreted.

Seems to me Hyundai and VW and the rising stars here. Sad for Honda, I think they will continue to drop in ranking.

Honda deserves to drop in the rankings with the absolute ignorance they have been showing towards consumers (including Honda owners) and the market in general.

The dollar figures are gross sales and not net of anything...

Here you go:

Also, notice that Hyundai has the biggest gain from 2007 to 2008. Unit sales went up by 5 %. I wonder if the global recession actually help Hyundai because of their lower priced cars.

What helps Hyundai is they have the cheapest lower line of vehicles and always offering rebates on the lower line which helps salesbut cuts into the profit margin.

What helps Hyundai is the won. VW sells the most sub compacts and compacts with 70% of their lineup. Hyundai is 2nd. This is according to EVO.

Hyundai has really been doing well. It's quite impressive. Does the VW numbers include Audi sales?
