I (almost) ordered a purple Challenger R/T today.

Maybe. We'll see. There's only a limited number of purple ones going to be made.....so there won't be much time to decide. In the meantime, though, I've become as much (if not more) of a fan of Subaru engineering than I was even of the cars I grew up with 40 years ago. The Subaru flat-boxer-engine/symmetrical AWD combination and overall high quality really impresses me.
No doubt the Subies are excellent and practical cars (I have 2 close relatives with AWD Impreza and Outback Subies). I have driven several, but there is no way I could handle it as my only car..

Camaros are simply too hard to get. The Chevy people tell me the entire run of 2010's is sold out (GM only planned for 5000). At CL request, I tried to review one earlier....and could only get a static, parking-lot review of an RS model, not even a test-drive (even now, Chevy dealers aren't allowing test-drives, as virtually every one, both RS and SS, is pre-sold). Besides, its general build quality, like the Challenger's, doesn't impress me.

What I really wanted them to do was to come out with a new retro Road Runner......but that is not likely to happen. The original car, neat as it was, did not have clearcoat paint, rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel disc brakes, electronic ignition, or electronic fuel injection...features I would want.

Mike, you did the right thing. The car might be cool and the purple edition might remind you of your younger years, but its simply too poorly made, materials and build quality are way too shoddy.
And if it didn't impress you now, when its all bran new and shiny, believe me it will only aggravate you in the future. You review a lot of cars and you know that most chryslers nowadays have the same interiors. My parents 05 Grand Cherokee with interior did not last at all. Many switches are broken, steering wheel leather dye mostly came off, cheap plastics fall apart and discolor, and they are impossible to clean because of their texture, half of seat motors are already dead. And it only has 40k miles on it. Turn signal/headlight switch literally fell apart when I tried to turn on fog lights.
Also, I don't know about the quality of that purple paint, but regular Chrysler paint jobs are horrendous.
If anything, spend your hard earned money on a nicely restored original. It will be far cooler anyways.

Mike, I wish I were as strong willed as you. If I were that close to buying a car, I'd pull the trigger. Many times, buying a car is an emotional thing and that's okay. Isn't that why we are all here?
Too bad Chrysler didn't have the "money back guarantee" GM has going on right now. You'd be a prime candidate for that program.
At the recent OC Auto show, the Challenger was getting a lot of attention. The SMS tuned bright green was amazing. They managed to squeeze 700 hp out of that beast.

I hope those purple Challengers are only available with Hemi's, I want to cry every time I see a LX platform with a 3.5/2.7L V6 and living here in Marietta/ATL, they are all over the place, the 2.7 should have never existed in the LX, and thankfully someone decided to not offer it in the Challenger but the 3.5 is weak, and lacks refinement, and can not even compare to the Nissan 3.5/3.7 or Toyota 3.5
Chrysler has to hurry up with the new V6, the car can't compete with it's weight and low output engine

Funny you mention that, check local listing and SRT8 with low mileage can be had for cheap, I missed out on an 07 SRT8 300C with 4000 miles on it, everything but Nav for 20k

Yes, there were 4 of them at a local Chevy store here too, but not available for test-drive (I asked).....they were either pre-sold, factory program cars, or otherwise spoken for. One of them, BTW, a bright-red SS, had just been purchased by one of the Washington Redskins.

Yes.....that color (a limited number) is only for the R/T and SRT-8 models. The R/T has a 5.7L Hemi, with the cylinder-shutoff feature for cruising, and the SRT-8 has the 6.2L version without the shut-off feature.

mmarshall, I'm sure it was hard to walk away but that doesn't mean its over!
Only you can decide what's best for you. I do vividly remember you mentioning this color and this car in a few posts here in Car Chat. It's kind of like you asked for it and now they've built it.
I will admit it took me back just when I saw the pic and made me smile. Hopefully at the very least no matter what your 'final answer is' you had a smile on your face and enjoyed yourself.
