No doubt VW is in better shape than GM. VW also needs to expand their product line to include trucks (compact and full size) and either expand their diesel line to go hybrid...

Speaking of a VW hybrid, the Toureg hybrid is due out next year and the Audi Q5 hybrid is going to be release in the 2011 model year, both SUV will have the new 3.0 liter supercharged engine.

Yes, but that's not saying a lot.

70% of VWs sold are cheap, small sub compacts and compacts. They have SEAT, they have Skoda and Audi's product line has expanded to include the A5 etc and variants of the A3. With the global recession, that is the right product mix to have now. Toyota has invested heavily in SUVs and trucks as we are aware and their popularity has wanted.

that does not have much to do with anything - reason is that European and Chinese markets were least affected in the downturn, and thats where VW is the strongest and Toyota the weakest. For instance Toyota has only 5% of market in western european countries that got govt support and it had 10% of market in eastern european countries that didnt get govt support.

VW are most expensive vehicles in their classes in Europe, very much like Toyota in USA.

In fact, VW is basically european Toyota when it comes to perception in Europe..

ah, small but important piece of info:

From January to September this year, Toyota recorded 5.65 million sales globally, while Volkswagen posted 4.76 million sales.
So Toyota leads in sales by almost 1 million, they just adjusted their inventory by lowering production in Q1.

Default VW-Porsche Overtakes Toyota as World # 1 Car manufacturer

VW-Porsche has overtaken Toyota as the world's largest automaker, but the stay at the number one spot may be very temporary.

Volkswagen Group, having merged with Porsche, has had an output this year of 4.4 million units, while Toyota has produced 4 million vehicles since January 2009.

According to auto industry analysts IHS Global Insight, Volkswagen benefited from programs in Germany, the UK and China meant to spur car sales, while Toyota put the brakes on heavily during the automotive crisis that hit the industry late last year and early in 2009 and cut production substantially, slashing it almost in half from 2.1 million units to 1.1 million.

But Toyota is likely not about to cede its title for too long. After the collapse of GM, Toyota became the world's largest automaker, producing 9.24 million units in 2008. It is expected to only make about 7 million for 2009. But the Japanese automaker has a production capacity to manufacture about 10 million vehicles a year, far more than VW-Porsche. It is quite likely that once the crisis has passed, Toyota will once again be number one.

Quality, not quantity please. Nobody passes up an opportunity of owning a Porsche (pre VW), Ferrari, etc. because they are not the largest company in the world. Who cares?

Lexus Europe disagrees with this though?

If you compare Jan-Sept 2009 production figures, Toyota is ahead by 577k units. Toyota produced 4,937k vehicles to VW's 4,361k

In any case, it's just for bragging rights of a sort...

Surprised if in-fact VW did achieve this that quick, but let's wait until final ANNUAL sales and production figures.

It's silly for VW to arbitrarily (or the media for that matter) proclaim they are suddenly the world's #1 auto maker based on one month. The media must have nothing else to report these days .

I agree.......personally I feel like Toyota still makes some of the most reliable vehicles that are on the street today.

Default Volkswagen Steals Toyota's Crown as World's Largest Automaker

http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/auto...est-automaker/

The people want an empire, apparently, with that unassuming little black VW bug at the head of it.

The U.K.’s Guardian explains, "Volkswagen-Porsche has overtaken Toyota to become the world's largest car manufacturer as the German group benefits from state-backed stimulus packages around the globe." VW has "produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, outstripping its Japanese rival which has seen four million cars roll off production lines since January."
